YEOVIL Town have completed their hunt for contracted players and will turn attentions to loan targets – starting with Cardiff City’s Ben Nugent.
The Glovers have enjoyed a busy start to the summer, Gary Johnson assembling the majority of his squad before last night’s opening friendly at Frome Town.
Bristol City full back Brendan Moloney was the final piece in the boss’s permanent jigsaw, joining Nathan Smith, Aaron Martin, AJ Leitch-Smith, Chris Weale, Artur Krysiak, James Perrett and Jakub Sokolik among the new faces.
Johnson revealed the rest of his summer business would now be in the loan market, with Cardiff’s towering centre half Nugent top priority. It is understood the formality of international clearance is all that stands between the two clubs announcing the deal.
The former Street 20-year-old is no stranger to the Huish Park manager as he is the son of former Kettering and Yeovil defender Richard Nugent.
Johnson said: “I think we are close. All parties have agreed, but from the club’s official point of view we can’t say it’s happened until it’s happened.
“Both clubs are in conversation at the moment, both clubs have agreed and it’s just a matter of getting the paperwork done so he can come to us on loan.
“I know him and the family very well. His dad played for me at Kettering and he also played for Yeovil. I’ve known Richard and the family for a long time.
“I can remember Ben as a nine- or ten-year-old smashing up my living room playing football as a little kid. I’ve always been interested in his career.
“He had a fantastic year at Cardiff under Malky Mackay in the Championship when they got promoted. He was unlucky with a loan or two that didn’t work out, but he’s 6ft 5ins, he’s left-footed and he’s a good player. If it all comes off I’ll be really happy to have him at our club.”
On his summer recruitment drive, Johnson added: “I think at this moment in time we’re done for permanent players.
“We’ve got every position and cover in every position at the moment. Of course, with the nature of our business at the minute if one comes in another may have to go out.
“There will be some players disappointed come the start of the season that are a little bit further down the pecking order than they want and we might have to find something for them.
“At the moment, more or less everybody has got a similar chance, so we’re just working on that at the moment.”
The Glovers head to Basingstoke Town on Saturday with Johnson already purring over his squad’s fitness.
“I always look forward to seeing the new squad because we have had to bring in a lot of new players to add to those that have been with us for at least a season,” he said.
“Have they got any legs? I’ll be surprised as it’s still early in pre-season and we’ve worked them very hard. But they’ve come through it very well.
“We’ve got a very fit and athletic group, judging on all the tests that we do. This has been the best group so far over the years because we keep all the records of previous years.
“This group are ahead of that at the moment in their fitness. I’m pleased with that and that’ll show hopefully when they go into the games that although they done a lot of they are an athletic group.”
