CLEVELAND, Ohio – Goalie Charlie Horton of Hunting Valley signed with Cardiff City Football Club on Thursday, a step up in his burgeoning English soccer career from a third-division team to a second-division club.
Horton, 19, signed with Peterborough last July, and failed to make a first-team appearance for the club in League One, which is two rungs below the English League. He remains a highly regarded young prospect, and Peterborough granted him his release in April. Cardiff City, in Wales, was relegated to the Championship Division this year after finishing last in the 20-team Premier League.
Horton is with Cardiff City's under-21 side and in Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina, this week preparing for a preseason friendly and could not be reached for comment. He will be among four goalies challenging for a first-team spot with Cardiff.
Horton was born in London, and moved to Hunting Valley at age 9. He was a talented goalie from the start, but a late bloomer physically. He sprouted from 5-8 to 6-4 as he rose through ranks of local club soccer. He played with the Cleveland-based Internationals and spent a semester at the IMG Academy in Florida before graduating from University School last year. He had a scholarship to North Carolina, but turned it down for a rare chance to play in England.
Looks like we signed a new keeper
