Cardiff City kicked off their pre-season with a game in West Wales against Carmarthen Town on Monday. The first game of pre-season always brings a jolt of excitement, a jolt of anticipation. And with several new signings on show, and many players making their comeback, it’s a great chance for fans to see how the team will shape up.
Cardiff sauntered to a 3-0 win with a few players standing out. The goals were scored by the three M’s; Maynard, Mason and Macheda.
But what does the season hold for these three?
Nicky Maynard
A starring role? I hope so. Maynard is a fantastic player at Championship level and has proved that at Wigan and Bristol City. His two years at Cardiff City have been hampered by a serious injury and a loan spell at Wigan but he offers a lot up top. He’s pacey, a good finisher and links up well with other players. I wonder how much Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will favour him this season; he talked him up when Nicky was coming to the end of his loan spell at Wigan so it would seem he rates him.
Joe Mason
Joe Mason had a big impact at Bolton during his loan spell there and is a player I’d like to see get more time on the pitch next season; but I doubt he will. Unless Solskjaer wants to play him on the wing, I can’t see him getting a role up front. He’s a great talent and is such an intelligent footballer but I just don’t see him fitting into the squad. Bolton want him back and I’m sure he would relish first-team football.
Federico Macheda
Federico had a big impact on Birmingham last season; ten goals in 18 games in the Championship. Has never quite fulfilled his potential at Manchester United and has a point to prove to his former coaches and new employer. Solskjaer coached him during his time at United and knows exactly how he plays. Macheda is a big bloke and will be a handful for all defences; I’m sure Solskjaer will be giving him a big role in the forthcoming season.

Out of the three i see Macheda being the first choice cant see maynard or mason getting much game time to be honest.

Cant play Mason on the wing ..its not a natural position for him..and he's not that pacey
I reckon it will be Macheda and Guerra first choice with Alfie and Maynard as back up...

All three payed on Monday night, and looked up for it. Think they could all get important goals for us in the Championship

Mason should not be sold. It would be a crime if he was sold.
Maynard looks unfit and whilst he will score I'd prefer to see Mason get a starting berth.
Macheda has the potential to do well, really well.

Maynard look huge.
Remember when he came back for the game against Hull when he scored the penalty. He looks in good shape and I thought considering he has been injured all that season he had kept himself in good shape.
Considering he is not injured it makes you wonder what he has been doing.

Hope Mason shows in Pre Season.
