Profile: David Marshall – Is he worth £15m?

David Marshall won thousands of admirers last season with some phenomenal displays to keep Cardiff City fighting in the Premier League for as long as possible. He has 178 league appearances for the Bluebirds and whilst Cardiff got relegated they believe they can command a fee of £15m for the Scot. Is he worth it though?

DAVID MARSHALL

Position: Goalkeeper

Nationality: Scottish

Age: 29 (05/03/1985)

Clubs: Celtic, Norwich City, Cardiff City

Career Leagues Appearances: 307

Height: 6ft 3in (1.91m)

Weight: 13st

David Marshall has been heavily linked to a move back to the Premier League this summer, the most recent Daily Mail report being that Southampton will test Cardiff with an £8m bid. Arsenal are also interested and Squawka.com perhaps provide a reason why. The stat based website show that he was keeper of the week on 9 occasions making an average of 3.49 saves per game with an average claim success of 99%. He played over 3,330 minutes of Premier League football and was regularly highlighted by BBC’s Match of the Day as Cardiff’s key man.

In February 2014 manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær said “I wouldn’t swap him for anyone, that’s for sure”, at which point he had made 101 saves and had just added another world class one to his scrapbook to deny Aston Villa 3 points late on. Marshall has fantastic anticipation and moves quickly to make stops from shots whether inside his box or outside the area.

Marshall joined Cardiff from Norwich City in 2009 after the Canaries were relegated to League 1 and made an impact in the Championship. During the Bluebird’s promotion season of 2012/13 he kept 18 clean sheets, the best in the Championship, playing every game and endearing himself to the fans in Wales.

In April 2014 he was named in Sky Sports’ team of the season as talk of his future began to link him with a move away from Cardiff City Stadium. Cardiff will feel though that because of his signing of a new contract in February, tying him to the club until 2018, they are under no obligation to sell their star asset.

The Scotsman has 11 caps for his country and would surely desire a move to Arsenal if they came calling. He’s a passionate man though and his intelligence would, I believe, mean the move would have to be right for him. Marshall won’t want to be sitting on the bench as he gets older, the buying club wouldn’t want to pay out many millions for a benchwarmer either.

Solskjær has said: “I am hoping to convince him to stick with us. It’s up to me really to sell the idea of what we are going to be trying to do here next season and beyond that. Sell my philosophy to him if you like. I know he likes it at the club and is settled in the area, so we are hopeful he will be with us next season.” Will Cardiff City hold onto Marshall? Well, for me, he won’t be going anywhere for under about £12m/£13m at the very least and if the bidding war begins then who knows? He certainly would be a smart signing for any side looking for a reliable goalkeeper who has proved himself in the Premier League!

I'd let him go for anything above 8m.

I think 15m is unrealistic.

You always say this, but its not a case of that we need the money, we are doing all we can to keep him!

He could never be worth that much, as he never scored or even shot at goal :D :D :D

It's nothing to do with being happy or not. A player has a value and we have a big debt. I'd be happy for the players with big values to be moved on while they still have a strong value.

If we keep him I'd be delighted but can certainly see a good point in cashing in on him.

We dont have any need to cash in on him since we are in no real debt, all our debt is owed to Tan so whilst he is owner we havn't got real debt, also the money from his sale wouldn't go to lowering our 'debt' unless Tan said so... :bluescarf: :bluescarf: :bluescarf:

It's still money coming into the club.
Is value is only going to go down now.
