'I won't let David Marshall leave without a fight' Cardiff City boss Solskjaer gets tough in transfer market

After his stunning season in the Premier League, David Marshall will not be short of offers this summer. But Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has vowed to keep him at Cardiff City

Cardiff City boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has vowed to fight to keep hold of goalkeeper David Marshall.

The 29-year-old shot-stopper was the Bluebirds’ stand-out performer in the Premier League last season and is being linked with a glut of big clubs, including Arsenal, Tottenham and Celtic.

But although Solskjaer accepts he is likely to lose captain Steven Caulker, World Cup ace Gary Medel and first-choice front-man Fraizer Campbell, he believes he can persuade Marshall to carry on playing for City in the Championship.

Losing the four stars in one fell swoop would mean the entire spine of Solskjaer’s team being ripped out.

“David was excellent for us last season, the best goalkeeper in the Premier League,” said Solskjaer.

“I am hoping to convince him to stick with us. It’s up to me really to sell the idea of what we are going to be trying to do here next season and beyond that.

“Sell my philosophy to him if you like. I know he likes it at the club and is settled in the area, so we are hopeful he will be with us next season.”

Marshall was signed by former Cardiff boss Dave Jones for just £500,000 from Norwich back in May 2009 and the Bluebirds have tried to fend off interest from other clubs by slapping a price tag of £15m on their player.

“There have been no big bids for David yet and to be honest I don’t want any big bids for him either,” continued Solskjaer.

Caulker does look destined to leave, though, and is mulling over an £8million offer from Queens Park Rangers to move straight back into the Premier League.

Crystal Palace are also said to be interested in the 22-year-old defender and Solskjaer is on the look-out for a replacement.

Reports suggest the Bluebirds were knocked back after bidding £3million for Southampton’s Portuguese centre-half Jose Fonte.

Solskjaer is also being linked with a raid on his former club Manchester United, with 21-year-old Michael Keane a possibility on loan for the entire 2014-15 season.

The youngster, highly regarded at Old Trafford, spent last season in Championship football on loan at Derby and Blackburn.

Solskjaer is hoping he will be prepared to drop down once again to help the Cardiff cause, with some suggesting the deal is so close it only has to be rubber-stamped by new United boss Louis van Gaal.

He, of course, has more pressing matters to deal with at the moment, with a World Cup semi-final for the Netherlands looming against Argentina.

Solskjaer has also been heavily linked with fellow Norwegian Brede Hangeland, who has just been released by Fulham.

Medel seems certain to move abroad, but Campbell’s proposed move to Leicester has stalled.

Palace boss Tony Pulis could step in with an £850,000 offer to the Bluebirds for Campbell.

Have to agree, and not sure we need a 8m pound keeper in the championship. Would still be a shame but it's understandable.

Im not in the slightest surprised. Of course he's going.

If DM really wants to stay he will. He's not going to turn that money down.....neither will the club. It's all a game of bluff to jack up the price.
