' On this day July 4th Cardiff City '

Thu Jul 03, 2014 11:36 pm

On this day - 4 July, Cardiff City parted company with two local lads

West Ham United made a double signing on this day in 2005

04.07.2014

West Ham United made a double defensive swoop on this day nine years ago to bring Cardiff City pair Danny Gabbidon and ' ' ' 'James Collins to the Boleyn Ground.

The pair, both Welsh internationals, helped Cardiff rise from League Two to the Championship before earning their top flight chance with the Hammers, who had just been promoted via the play-offs.
They immediately played their part for the Hammers, Gabbidon featuring in 32 league games that season, while Collins was involved in 14.
The Club also enjoyed a thrilling run to the FA Cup final that season, and both Gabbidon and Collins were in the squad for that cruel penalty shootout defeat to Liverpool.

' Danny Gabbidon '

Gabbidon would remain at the Boleyn Ground for six years, playing 113 games in claret and blue without scoring a goal before moving on to Queens Park Rangers.
He currently plays for Crystal Palace and was part of their squad which won promotion back to the Barclays Premier League last term.

' James Collins '

Collins, meanwhile, left for Aston Villa in 2009 but returned to east London last summer and remains an integral part of Sam Allardyce's squad as they prepare for the start of the 2014/15 campaign.

James Collins & Danny Gabbidon formed an excellent understanding. Only bettered by Roger Johnson & Loovens, who strangely did not have the same success after leaving City as our all Welsh partnership.

I was very impressed with Loovens in particular, I thought his career would of taken off with the calmness he used to show on the pitch. :bluescarf: :bluescarf: :bluescarf:

I know your not a Dave Jones fan, it's understandable as he did not interact with the fans as he should of. However, he did have an eye for talented players at cheap prices.

Can Ole do the same? :bluescarf: :bluescarf: :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

At the time I was a bit more upset at losing the ginger monster.

Loved Danny who was a class defender but Ginge was just starting to mature into a very decent centre half who scored a few goals as well.

in fact, didn't Collins start out as a striker with us?
