Cardiff City want former Fulham defender Brede Hangeland.

Hangeland is a target for Cardiff

The Norwegian centre-back is a free agent having been released by Fulham last month, but Football League World reported in June that Hangeland claimed to be ‘disappointed beyond words’ having been released by the Cottagers via email.

But, the club hit back and said the player had engineered a move out of Fulham because he did not want to play in the Championship.

Bluebirds boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has targeted the 32-year-old as a possible replacement for Steven Caulker, who has been linked with a move away from the Cardiff City Stadium since the club were relegated from the Premier League.

Hangeland spent six years at Craven Cottage making 267 appearances, scoring 12 goals.

As a norwegian on this board I must say Im not too sure about this.. Brede has had a major drop in quality over the last two years, both in fullham and on our national team. He seems to bo on a downhill slope. I'd rather see Cardiff buying something else.. Ofc he could be a decent backup..

Be happy with this as a replacment for Caulker at championship level, would of thought is wages would be high but saying that dont think that would stop us.

Looks like Ole could be signing quality for peanuts or nothing again. This guy knows how to work the transfer market. Theres no denying that :ayatollah:

Totally agree. Hangeland isn't getting any younger and his performances have dipped the past couple of seasons. He looked very slow and cumbersome against us last season and despite being very tall, he's always looked a bit of a fairy to me. He's always struck me as more of a gentle giant type than a streetwise, no nonsense type. I don't think Hangeland is any better than what we currently have and he would probably also demand huge wages which would be much better spent elsewhere.

He has interest from a host of PL clubs. Not sure he would want to play in the championship.
At the time he was released he claimed Fulham informed him via email, they say he had an offer on the table but didn't want to play in the championship. Apparently he was gonna go to qpr, Harry is a big admirer.

I also heard there was interest from Everton, Sevilla and Werder Bremen, we don't stand a chance!

Would be a cracking signing, much better than Turner - he can pass and he is 6 feet 7!

Should have signed him before the World Cup.

Please no. Incredibly injury prone and isn't as good as a few years back. We should look for a younger CB.

Much prefer Danny gabbidon on a 12month contract myself.

He is well past it... Though he might be useful for a year in the championship.

A gamble, I would say. In an interview with Hangeland some time ago, I didn´t get the impression at all that Hangeland had given up on finding his best form again. But a new injury could be devastating.

Agreed. That'll be a good signing and will cost a lot less. Full Welsh international with a good season behind him.

I would rather keep Cala, turner, Hudson and Connolly as our 4 centre backs, bet he's on a fair sized wage and is very injury prone

Shit no thanks.

Am I the only one who doesn't think we urgently need another defender? We have Turner, Cala, Connolly and Hudson as centre backs, plus Oshilaja who impressed for Newport and had Championship experience with Sheffield Wednesday last season, plus Ben Nugent. We have John for left back, Catherine and Brayford for right back and then Fabio and McNaughton who can play both left back and right back.

Being greedy, I would love an excellent centre back who's a commanding leader who can organise, but if not, I am still more than happy with our defensive options and I don't think this is an area that needs strengthening unless we can attract someone even better than what we currently have for a decent price.

Quick fullbacks and a defender who can head is all you really need in the championship. We got a mobile CB in Cala and Caulker. Think he do fine the championship for a season

This.

Mark Hudson's absence last year has made people forget the season he gave us the year before. Connolly makes for great back up at this level. If Turner can gain confidence, improve and as importantly, quicken his decision making, he will be an excellent CB for the level we are playing at. These are improvements that can be coached.

Our priority should be down-sizing the squad before we bloat it even more. Its not just about compounding financial issues its about avoiding morale issues for decent players having they careers plummet from not playing. Have faith in what we have already.

Hudson is injury prone. He couldn't complete our promotion season and couldn't complete last season. He is slow and has more than likely suffered hugely with it. Add to the fact he has had a lack of game time in the last 12 months.

I like Hudson but there is no way we should start next season with those 4 as CB's. Connolly hasn't played since August and Hudson suffers with injuries. Selling Connolly and bringing in a young, experienced CB who can play out from the back is the best way to go.
