' Caulker deal now looks remote '

by MATTHEW HARRIS

THURSDAY JULY 3, 2014

As the summer wears on, it is starting to look less likely that Spurs will make a move to snap up their former player Steven Caulker. The centre half was sold to Cardiff 12 months ago and despite impressing in their back four, he couldn’t prevent the Bluebirds from being relegated.

It subsequently emerged that the player had a release clause in his contract should the Welsh side drop back into the Championship and that prompted a host of White Hart Lane links, even before the season came to a close.

The other club widely tipped to go in for Caulker were Liverpool whose manager Brendan Rodgers looked after the player when he took a loan spell at Swansea. In time, Arsenal were also mentioned but recently, the strength of connected teams seems to have taken a dip.

According to today’s press, Caulker’s choice is a move back to London to either Crystal Palace or his former boss Harry Redknapp at QPR. Does the defender really deserve to be in another relegation battle or is it time for Tottenham to make their move?

I think this one will run for a while yet. I can see him still being with us for the start of the season, but going before the transfer window closes at the end of August. Especially if some of the lesser clubs want him.

If one of the top 7 clubs wanted him, he would have been gone by now.

Next on Redknapp’s list is believed to be Cardiff’s relegated captain Caulker

Thursday 3rd July 2014.

QPR boss Harry Redknapp is hopeful that the imminent signing of Rio Ferdinand will be enough to tempt Steven Caulker to overlook interest from Liverpool and Crystal Palace to move to Loftus Road, according to reports from The Mirror.

The released Manchester United man – who has been working as a pundit at the World Cup – is expected to pen a contract with the Super Hoops in the coming weeks as ‘Arry steps up his plans to keep the R’s in the Premier League.

Next on Redknapp’s list is believed to be Cardiff’s relegated captain Caulker, who is also wanted by Liverpool and Palace.

The England international was one of the few good performers for the Bluebirds last term as they slipped to relegation, but an £8m release clause in his contract looks set to guarantee him a return to the top tier before 2014/15 starts.

QPR hope that they can win the race, with the prospect of partnering Ferdinand – one of English football’s most celebrated centre-backs – an ace up their sleeve.

Caulker is said to be keen to link up with Brendan Rodgers – who coached him during a loan stint at Swansea – at Liverpool, but if that move doesn’t materialise QPR lead the battle.

I think QPR will be his destination. Perfect senior partner in Rio to bring him on and fulfil his potential which cant really be doubted.

Personally I would rather Caulker go now(as he is going eventually anyway), instead of it going on and on, and lets sort a replacement out ASAP.

i agree, but as mentioned earlier, its a case of weather or not he'd want to spend another season avoiding the drop (only to then move on again in a year).

But agreed. he has bags of potential and rio would be the perfect partner for him
