Don Cowie turns down Glasgow Rangers and Blackburn Rovers to stay at Cardiff City

Tuesday Jul 01, 2014

By Terry Phillips

He was a regular in Malky Mackay's team that won the Championship and he played his fair share of Premier League action last season and now it looks like Don Cowie will remain at Cardiff City

Scottish international Don Cowie is STAYING at Cardiff City.

That looks certain, despite a summer long battle for 'The Don's' signature between the Bluebirds, Glasgow Rangers and Championship rivals Blackburn Rovers.

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is keen to finalise his squad for the new season and will sit down with the midfield dynamo at their Vale Hotel training base this week.

Cowie is currently out of contract and technically available on a free but has been offered a new two-year deal, which he is now ready to sign.

Solskjaer's squad reported back for pre-season training on Monday and the former Manchester United striker is keen to clear up any lingering contract issues.

Rangers manager Ally McCoist has admitted he would love to sign Cowie, but the tenacious midfielder would have to take a major pay cut to play in Scottish Division One, meaning a high-profile move to Ibrox is off the agenda for the time being.

So that leaves Blackburn Rovers, who feature Cowie's former teammates Rudy Gestede and Craig Conway in their squad, as the only serious contenders to uproot the Highlander from South Wales.

But with time running out before the pair kick off the football league season on Friday, August 8, Ewood Park boss Gary Bowyer has been told he has to move fringe players on before bringing anyone in.

Bowyer put Leon Best, DJ Campbell, Dickson Etuhu and David Goodwillie on the transfer list a month ago, but only Goodwillie has left the club after agreeing a deal to pay up his contract.

Inverness-born Cowie, 31, will seek assurances from Solskjaer that he will be fully involved this season before signing on the dotted line but it seems as though those details will be ironed out early this week.

Cowie has scored nine goals in almost 100 first team appearances for Cardiff over the last three seasons including 10 starts at Premier League level during 2013-14.

The Bluebirds play their first pre-season match of the season next Monday when they travel to play Welsh Premier League Carmarthen Town, while they go on a week-long tour to Germany in mid-July.

Cardiff have signed five new players this summer – Javi Guerra, Federico Macheda, Guido Burgstaller, Adam Le Fondre and Kagisho Dikgacoi – are keen to add one more, a central defender, before the opening Championship fixtures at Blackburn on Friday, August 8.

Happy with this, he's a workhorse and will be a good player to have in the championship this season.

Seconded.. time to go.

Lots are saying "good squad player", however, he only becomes of any use to us the moment he steps onto the pitch and in my view he huffs & puffs without ever managing to blow the house down.. very rarely hear is name mentioned, whether it's for winning the ball or making good use of it.

I think that shows a good attitude. He would rather refuse a nice "signing on fee", and be closer to Scotland, to fight for his place with us.

Probably because he wont want less wages. Also he can demand more when he becomes a free agent.

Thought he might have fancied Blackburn Rovers, but glad he's staying. Scottish football is a complete joke.

Good job we never signed Goodwillie, he has proved a waste of space too....

Does this suggest we are still a payer of good wages?

We offered him a new contract and would assume that, based on his position in the squad, it was a contract on a reduced salary.

He had a look around and still seems to want to stay.

Let's hope its because he is happy here and wants to fight for a place. As opposed to us still offering excessive wages.

So why he is haggling over the contract? Sign it.
