Crystal Palace set to hijack Leicester City's bid for Cardiff City striker Fraizer Campbell

Sunday Jun 29, 2014

By Terry Phillips

Campbell had been set to complete his move to Leicester by the end of last week but Tony Pulis has now stepped in with a bid to bring him to Selhurst Park

Fraizer Campbell could now be on his way to Palace

Crystal Palace are set to hijack Leicester City’s bid to sign Cardiff City striker Fraizer Campbell.

Newly promoted Leicester were first to trigger a release clause in Campbell’s contract with the Bluebirds and now Palace have followed suit.

It was thought Campbell's move to Leicester would be confirmed at the end of last week after he met with manager Nigel Pearson, but that appears to have been delayed.

The release clause is set at £800,000 plus just over £100,000 in add-ons for appearances and goals

Both Leicester City, who have been in talks with Campbell for some time, and Palace have both offered the right amount.

That doesn’t mean Cardiff will benefit from a bidding war because the release clause means neither club has to offer more.

The choice is down to Campbell. He can stay with Cardiff City, who have put a new, lucrative deal in front of the striker, while he can chooce to sign for Leicester, Palace or any other club who makes the right offer.

Cardiff and Palace do not have a comfortable relationship following the ‘Spygate’ issues from last season, when manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team was leaked just before the clubs played each other, but that won’t have any effect on the Campbell situation now.

Solskjaer can only wait for Campbell’s decision.

The Yorkshireman, 26, signed for Cardiff during January 2013 in a £650,000 transfer from Sunderland. Former Manchester United and Spurs forward Campbell netted 16 goals in more than 50 appearances for City, six of them in the Premier League.

This has run longer than I expected.

As it says we have offered him a lucrative contract does anyone think we could have stuck an excessive wage on the contract?

I wouldn't put it past our lot to offer a greater salary than Palace and as he didn't just sign for Leicester perhaps their offer wasn't up to much either.

Premier League or cash????

I think he will go, can see him being on the bench with us next season so can't see him staying for that.

Seriously?...you think Frazier will be a bench warmer? He scored 8 goals for us in PL. He is receiving offers from PL clubs yet you claim he will be on the bench at our club in the championship? No way!!!

He would score at least 20 plus goals for us in PL. If you think that is a bench warmer then your a fool.
I find it quite disrespectful towards Frazier that you can say that about him.
