How the world reacted to 'superhuman' Cardiff City star Gary Medel's World Cup devastation

viewtopic.php?f=2&t=143305 :ayatollah:

It was one of the great World Cup performances, one of Brazil 2014's most iconic moments.

When Cardiff City's Gary Medel, exhausted and physically broken, was taken from the field on a stretcher, the emotion was simply too much.

Medel had played for 109 minutes, run 10km and given every ounce of his being to his nation's cause.

Soon after Medel's exit, Chile would suffer the ultimate heartbreak of penalty shootout elimination against holders Brazil - a devastating fate that left Medel in uncontrollable floods of tears.

While there is little consolation in such a defeat, Medel and his Chile team-mates had captured the hearts of the football world.

In Gary Medel, Cardiff City, for now at least, have a true World Cup warrior.

Here is how the world's media, football fans and Medel himself reacted to an epic World Cup performance...

La Cuarta, Chile media

All of Chile watched Gary Medel run as if it was the last game of his life, fighting for every ball despite a muscle tear which eventually forced him to leave the field on a stretcher, crying, not able continue in the game.

The "Pitbull", with heart in hand and full of emotions, took the time to acknowledge the support provided by all Chileans.

Medel's tears showed he, and Chile, were the true gladiators of Brazil 2014.

Emol.com, Chile media

If the game was just a day before, Chile coach Jorge Sampaoli had said Gary Medel would not have played because of a muscle tear.

Medel preferred risk, and, in his 108 minutes on the pitch, he eventually became the great figure of the 'Red' in Belo Horizonte.

He did it his way, becoming the main protragonist. Medel was the leader of the defence, the spearhead of this great squad.

The midfielder-turned-defender somehow recovered to start against the hosts on Saturday and run 10km during 109 minutes at Estadio Mineirao.

With heavy strapping on his left leg, Medel – playing out of position against one of the best attackers in the world – ran himself into the ground, throwing himself at shot after shot and putting in tackle after tackle on the likes of Neymar, Oscar and Hulk.

At the end of 90 minutes he collapsed on to his back inside the centre circle.

While Sampaoli encouraged the rest of the team, Medel was receiving treatment on his left leg in order for him to carry on into extra-time.

Only when he could no longer walk in the 109th did Medel accept that his part in the game was up. He left the field on a stretcher, biting back tears.

When Gonzalo Jara fired Chile’s fifth spot-kick against the post, Medel was inconsolable. Again he sunk to the turf in Estadio Mineirao.

This time he could not fight back the tears.

Jason Burt, The Telegraph

Cardiff City’s Gary Medel played with a torn leg muscle but was tenacious and carried on until he simply could not carry on any more.

David Hynter, The Guardian

The Chilean hard-men, such as Gary Medel, were left to fight back the tears.

In the end, it came down to the most excruciating of margins – but amid the grief there could be Chilean pride.

Paul Abbandonato, WalesOnline

TV screens and newspaper back pages across the globe captured images of Chilean colleagues rallying around the inconsolable Bluebirds man as he produced tears that made Gazza look as if he merely had sore eyes.

That was what the World Cup meant to Gary Medel. The dream was over, but only after one of the most gusty team performances we have witnessed. Led, make no mistake, by his courage, tenacity and determination.

The man himself

Following the heartbreaking defeat, Medel himself tweeted: "Thanks to all the fans who encouraged us in the stadium and throughout Chile. We were motivated to fight to the end.

HITC Sport

Gary Medel was superb for Chile, but it wasn't enough for them to qualify for the quarter finals as they lost 3-2 on penalties to Brazil in Belo Horizonte.

The defender answered everything asked of him by the Brazilian attack; blocks, tackles and clearances. He was in tears when they were knocked out. Shame as he did everything for his country.

The world of Twitter

Football fans around the world we completely bowled over by Medel's performance and emotion.

He's backtracking quickly mind - upped to average now.

Irrespective anyway, his opinion is irrelevent as he's just a wind-up merchant.

It's been brilliant watching one of our own performing in the World Cup. Can't remember it happening before - and for him to do so well has been a massive bonus.

Hopefully his injury isn't too serious or we might be stuck with him

Can't quite tell if you are joking or not?
But I would not mind being 'Stuck with him' as he is quality, I don't get how know one understands that he was injured for the final part of the season and couldn't produce the form we saw at the start of the season! If he had of been fully rested for the full 6 weeks that he should have been out for then we would have seen a better Medel but we also might have been down by the time he was fully fit!

Ive never ever once called him crap. Dont let that get in the way of sensationalising a story like the OP though

I said he is an average premier league player and not worth anywhere near £11m which is a fact considering he was one of the worst performing defensive midfielders in the league last year.

He had a couple of good games at the world cup though - cool :laughing6:

'Tear me a new arsehole'

By wriggling like a worm ?
By posting 100 times a day on here with general rubbish ?
By twisting meaningless stats to suit your agenda ?

You are a cancer on this board and as and when I spot you spouting shit I'll expose you. Otherwise I'm not interested in a sad little faggot who's life is dominated by a club who he never sees play live.

You called him crap -end of.

There for all to see.

Wriggle.

I won't get involved in long-winded debate with you as it's a waste of time and unlike you I have real life businesses to run and a family. :thumbright:

You called him crap and are trying to wriggle out of it. Simple. Funny that you are trying to 'yes, but' out of it.

There's a few you have asked for apologies in the last few days, when there was clearly none due, is it hurting a bit being made to look a dick.

Difference is plenty of people know who I am, wheras you are too ashamed to put your own name against your profile.

End of story as far as I'm concerned - how about letting people make their own minds up ?

Crap for £11m is not the same as a crap player. Simple.

This is proven by the fact Ive called him average from day 1 and every time ive spoken about him since.

A fit Medel played in the right way is a really good player, when we played the jacks at home he single handed tore apart the Jacks and proved he is worth 11 million

He always needed a quicker player along side him in the middle which we never had so it left him exposed. Look at how Chelsea set up whenever they play Mikel or Lampard they have Ramires along side him or look Liverpool with Gerrard they have Henderson beside him or even Madrid in that they have Modric along side Alonso. Obviously they are all much bigger teams to us and have vastly better players but it was always stupid to have so little pace in the middle of the park.

Hi Guys.

I think it would be flying in the face of logic to say that Medel has had an average tournament and as reported worldwide, his commitment, passion and skills were there for all to see in that last game.

However, I wouldn't deny that his games for Cardiff have been a totally different kettle of fish. Fo some reason, he couldn't flourish at the club. His motivation was brought into question on many occasions.

WHY?

I'm no expert, but he was playing in a team which was patchy. Some really descent players, but others who struggled at the higher level. It made Medel look ordinary, but in the beginning, he was able to fight his way out of trouble. The problem is that if wore thin and yes, I believe he lacked drive during the second half of the season.

Maybe Medel needed some sort of guidance and maybe the upheaval of changing manager affected him more than others for some reason.

All of the above (WHY?) could be seen as excuses, but it is my gut feeling that I'm not too far off the money.

Has he been average? Probably considering his contract value.
Can he be better than average? I think we've had glimpses recently.

Just saying. :bluescarf:

And id agree with nearly all of that.

Although i dont think he is cut out for the Premier League as opposed to it being everyone elses fault.

We may never find out because he will probably move on. You could be right about the PL. He doesn't look comfortable, but the European leagues with a more Latin style could well bring out the best in him.

No doubt the WC has improved his stock so at least he will command a descent amount (although probably less than paid).
