Chile player ratings v Brazil: Cardiff man outstanding

By
Ryan Lewis

Gary Medel was superb for Chile, but it wasn't enough for them to qualify for the quarter finals as they lost 3-2 on penalties to Brazil in Belo Horizonte.

David Luiz opened the scoring for Brazil in the 18th minute, after a corner from Neymar that was flicked on by Thiago Silva. Luiz was at the back post to scramble the ball in.

Chile, who were outstanding throughout, equalised after 32 minutes when Alexis Sanchez punished poor Brazil defending with a cool finish past Julio Cesar.

Both teams pushed for a winner, but neither team could find one as the result was forced to penalties where hosts Brazil come out on top 3-2.

Here are the player ratings for Chile:

Claudio Bravo - 8

The new Barcelona signing made a good save from a Dani Alves shot in the first half, and didn't make a mistake from long-range shots later on. Saved a Hulk penalty in the shoot out.

Gary Medel - 8 :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

Medel was superb. The defender did everything asked of him by the Brazilian defence; blocks, tackles and clearances. Was in tears when they were knocked out. Shame as he did everything for his country.

Francisco Silva - 7

Brilliant piece of defending in the first half to block a goal-bound Neymar header wide of the post. Was outpaced at times though by the Brazilian striker.

Gonzalo Jara - 7

Former West Brom player hit the post with the penalty that meant Chile were knocked out of the World Cup, played with real energy throughout the 120 minutes though.

Mauricio Isla - 8

Made a great tackle in the first half when it looked like Fred was bound to score, linked up well when going forward, created a good chance for Aranguiz to score with a wonderful pass.

Charles Aranguiz - 8

Nearly scored in the second-half but for a save from Julio Cesar. Was often the catalyst for Chile's pressing game that worked so well for them, a lot of energy in his performance.

Marcelo Diaz - 8

Was dictating the possession football for Chile in the midfield of the park, was very reminiscent of a Pirlo performance. Found so much space in doing so, good performance.

Eugenio Mena - 7

Made an outstanding clearance to prevent a certain goal for Jo in the second half, other than that made little impact on the match.

Arturo Vidal - 7

Linked up well going forward with Aranguiz and Diaz, didn't have as much of the ball in dangerous areas as he would have liked. Pressed the ball well though when defending.

Alexis Sanchez - 8

Looked dangerous every time he was given space, and even when he was closed down he maintained possession on a number of occasions. Barcelona will be silly to let him leave.

Eduardo Vargas - 7

Held the ball up well for his side, pressed well. However he feel he could have done better on certain counter-attacks for Chile when well placed.

Subs:

Felipe Gutierrez - 7

Come on for Eduardo Vargas after 57 minutes, provided much needed energy in the Chile midfield and kep possession well for his country.

Mauricio Pinilla - 7

Come on for Arturo Vidal after 87 minutes, hit the cross bar in the last minute of extra time with a thunderous effort from the edge of the area. Missed his penalty in the shoot-out though.

Jose Manuel Rojas - 7

Come on for Gary Medel after 108 minutes to ensure Chile held out the remaining twelve minutes and get to penalties. Helped achieve that with his fresh legs.

He certainly done his reputation no harm this tournament Annis, which is a bonus to us, hopefully we can recoup our costs on him.

Over all Gavin he has done really well on the World stage, better than any England player, hopefully it will help us get as much money back as possible :thumbright:

His dedication to his country is admirable.

His commitment and contribution to his club not quite so admirable.

All down to how he's being asked to play in my opinion.

Truly great players can adapt to any playing style and any position they are asked to play.

His lack of fitness and, certainly for the second half of the season, lack of commitment to the cause would lead me to question his value to our season.

I admit he looked decent in the World Cup but as a centre half. Can you imagine any team in the Premier League playing him as a centre half?

I wonder if his injury will put off any potential move and he turns out for us in the championship next season. We can live in hope. Either way, we end up winners as his price tag has surely gone up a bit....even If we don't recoup what we paid for him.

Thats utter nonsense.

Maradona wouldnt be much of a centre half, Messi couldnt adapt as a right back. Maybe play Cannavaro as winger???

Can't believe people are questioning his commitment to us. He was excellent until he suffered a couple of injuries, the first away at Arsenal, where he'd been superb - this kept him out for the Southampton game where we were fightless and stuffed and he then came back in and had a couple of games where he had to be taken off early, clearly not 100% fit.

Then a few weeks later during the Wigan game he tore his thigh muscle, which after a scan revealed he'd be out for 6 weeks.

He came back after because basically he was our only hope after the Medel-less clueless drubbing by Hull.

Might be better asking Ole why he had to risk our best outfield player in an FA Cup game when we were staring relegation in the face.

He was back after 2 weeks
Clearly not fit his performance levels dropped . He could easily have sat it out for 6 weeks and kept his reputation intact.

I hope he gets a decent move - he deserves it.

Hear hear! Anyone would struggle with fitness, technique and motivation playing in a shit midfield line up like we had last season!

I bet Messi would be a fantastic right back!

And if Gary Medel can play centre half you can bet that Maradona would have been just as good.

Can't understand the Medel love-in myself. We paid far too much money for a player who it would appear was played out of position, was unfit and overweight, who was spectacularly unsuited to the British game and who now it would seem can't wait to move away.

Second only to Cornelius as the biggest waste of money in the history of the club.

Your football brain is worrying if you believe that Maradona could play centre half and Messi would bea great right back.

Why does it seem Medel cant wait to get away? He hasnt done or said anything of the sort.

Reason why players cant adapt to british game is thesame reason England fail so spectacularly......they are both about 20 years behind the times. All the teams in this world cup look comfortable on the ball and know how to keep possession when needed.

Spot on  Some people can't see the difference between a lack of fitness and a lack of trying and I'm sure towards the end of last season Medels form was more to do with a lack of fitness.

Asking Medel to play midfield is like asking Messi to play right back. WTF

Finally someone who understands, he was made to play whilst injured! He was told he was going to be out for 6 weeks and every City fan cried, he came back after 2/3 weeks and never looked the same because he was rushed back, the reason he was rushed back is because we was piss poor with out him, I really hope he stay but if he dont I wish him all the best and will always keep an eye out for him :ayatollah: :old:

Yeah, 2 weeks it was.

Most people who've played at any level have been through this, playing through a knock to help out the side then being told they played sh1t :?
