As Cardiff City boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer launches his search for a new defender, we look at some potential candidates

Who will Cardiff City go for in the transfer market?

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is keen to add one more player to his Cardiff City squad for the 2014-15 season, and the style of player he wants is a solid, effective central defender.

The new man looks likely to start alongside big Ben Turner, although Juan Cala and Mark Hudson will do all they can to earn a starting place.

No club has yet matched Cardiff’s valuation of Caulker, thought to be £8m, and Solskjaer would love him to stay. That does look unlikely and Solskjaer has been scouring Europe for the right defender to come in and play a key role in City’s back four.

Here's our list of central defensive possibles?

14 potential Cardiff City central defensive targets

Remember these cult Cardiff City signings?...30 Brilliant pictures of your heroes on their first day as a Bluebird

Harry Maguire (Sheffield United)

Has a year left on his contract and Wolves are among the clubs keen to move in on the £1m-rated 21-year-old. Several Premier Division clubs are also watching the situation, but Maguire looks set to sign a new contract with the Blades.

Wolves’ Richard Stearman could also have been a Cardiff possibility, but he has now signed a new contract at Molineux.

Roger Johnson (Wolves)

The former Bluebirds’ stopper is not wanted by Wolves and would relish a return to South Wales where he had some of the best seasons in his career. Johnson made 136 first team appearances for Cardiff between 2006 and 2009 before moving on to Birmingham City for £5m. Has a year left on his Wolves contract, but he is clearly not in first team plans.

Sheffield Wednesday, from the Championship, are keen. Johnson, 31, spent time on loan with the Yorkshire club last season and did well, but he would have to take a cut on his £25,000-a-week wages.

Wednesday released three experienced central defenders in ex-Tottenham man Anthony Gardner, 33, former Birmingham City centre-back Martin Taylor, 34 and Miguel Llera, 34. It is unlikely any of those will interest Cardiff.

Manager Stuart Gray wants to keep Oguchi Onyewu and former Bluebird Glenn Loovens, who finished the season as his starting pair, together but does want one more centre-back to add competition.

Muhamed Besic (Ferencvaros)

The Bosnian international defender could fit Solskjaer’s needs. The 21-year-old earned rave reviews and is in Bosnia’s squad for the World Cup in Brazil.

Former Hamburg player Besic is attracting interest from Cardiff, Anderlecht, Borussia Monchengladbach and Fenerbahce. Berlin-born Besic has previously been linked with a Premier League move to Tottenham. Reports in Belgium claimed Cardiff are now in the running.

Besic has been hailed in Hungary for his defensive ability and ball-playing skill.

Michael Dawson (Spurs)

Could be available, but won’t look beyond the Premier League. Hull City made a £4million bid and other Premier League clubs will monitor the situation.

Rio Ferdinand

Officially a free agent after being released by Manchester United, but he, like Dawson, will stay at Premier League level and looks certain to link up with Queens Park Rangers.

Craig Dawson (West Brom)

Has had a transfer request rejected by Albion manager Alan Irvine and looks keen to move. Burnley had a £1m bid for Dawson, 24, rejected, but are considering a fresh bid for the former England Under-21 international.

Michael Keane (Manchester United)

Highly-rated by Manchester United. At the age of 21, though, new manager Louis van Gaal may be open to allowing the Stockport-born defender out on loan.

Solskjaer, of course, has strong contacts at Manchester United and knows all about a 6ft 2ins player who had loan spells with Derby County and Blackburn Rovers last season. He also played for Leicester City during 2012-13.

Molla Wague (Caen)

West Brom, Leicester City, Crystal Palace, Norwich City and Brentford are among the clubs weighing up a move for the Malian central defender. Italian and Spanish clubs are also watching the situation with interest.

Wague, 23, plays for Caen, who earned promotion to the French top flight for the new season. The player has been unable to agree a new contract with Caen and is free to move on.

Josef Yobo (Fenerbahce)

Linked with a move to Cardiff during 2012 and again in January when it was thought he could join the Bluebirds for £2m.

The 33-year-old has made 100 appearances for Nigeria and helped them through the World Cup group stages in Brazil. The former Everton man played for Norwich City on loan last season.

Ivan Ramis (Wigan)

Roberto Martinez was the Wigan manager who signed the Spanish defender.

The 29-year-old has one year left on his contract and is thought to be Wigan’s top earner. They would not stand in his way if Cardiff showed interest, but would want a fee.

Brede Hangeland

Released by Fulham this summer and Solskjaer will know all about the big Norwegian. Nottingham Forest and Queens Park Rangers are being linked with the 33-year-old.

Hangeland spent six and a half years playing for Fulham and is keen to stay in the Premier League, but perhaps Solskjaer’s influence could be decisive.

Kurt Zouma (Chelsea)

Aged 19 and rated among the most promising young players in Europe. The Frenchman played for St Etienne on loan last season and may well go back there.

It might, though, be worth Cardiff making a call to Jose Mourinho.

Jamaal Lascelles (Nottingham Forest)

Manchester City, Arsenal, Spurs and Everton are all keen on the 6ft 2in Lascelles, who is 20-years-old. If he does leave Forest it will surely be to a Premier League club.

Danny Gabbidon

Former Bluebirds’ defender would love a return home to Cardiff City.

Released by Crystal Palace at the end of last season and available on a free transfer.

Wales international Gabbidon, who is from Cwmbran, is 34-years-old and has regained his place in the Wales squad.

If I was to get rid of Hudson I wouldn't want to get rid of a 31 year old for a 33 year old would prefer someone younger

Instead of signing someone why not give Ben Nugent a chance to compete alongside Turner, Hudson and Cala for the starting spots. I assume this signals the end for Connolly

So get rid one of one experienced player for an even older player who is very injury prone? :?
