Ole Gunnar Solskjaer needs to trim a squad of over 40 players after already adding five new faces and targeting one more central defender

The players who could potentially leave Cardiff City

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will allow up to 10 players to leave Cardiff City this summer as he targets one more player in his Championship jigsaw.

The Bluebirds currently have more than 40 senior professionals on their books and that is far too many for Solskjaer, who will work with chairman Mehmet Dalman in trimming that number.

City have already added five new signings in Guido Burgstaller, Kagisho Dikgacoi, Adam Le Fondre, Federico Macheda and Javi Guerra with one to come in.

Fraizer Campbell, Steven Caulker and Gary Medel are all expected to leave, while Matt Connolly, Kevin Theophile, Jo Inge Berget, Kenwyne Jones and Don Cowie could all be on their way out as Solskjaer plans for a major assault on automatic promotion back to the Premier League.

There could also be a doubt over the future of club captain Mark Hudson, who may find himself out of the starting line-up with Ben Turner and a new central defender tipped to form a solid partnership with Juan Cala expected to be the main challenger.

Hudson, 32, badly needs a full season of first team football after being ruled out by injuries for most of last season. He played only 81 minutes in total over two Premier League appearances.

It won’t suit Hudson, who has been with Cardiff for five years and played a major role in the promotion season, to sit out among the substitutes and if he is made available that is certain to spark big interest from Championship rivals.

While Campbell, who is expected to complete his £800,000 move to Leicester City this week, Caulker and Medel all look likely to move on Cardiff will battle all the way to keep their best players.

Spurs, Liverpool, Queens Park Rangers and Newcastle have all been linked with Caulker, while Turkish club Besiktas and Spain’s Valencia are keen on Medel.

All three have release clauses in their contracts, but only Leicester have hit the right mark with their bid for Campbell. Cardiff have made it clear to the striker they want him to stay, but it is his own decision because of that contract clause.

There have been enquiries for a number of players, but the Bluebirds will not be selling any of their key players on the cheap.

Solskjaer certainly wants to keep goalkeeper David Marshall plus powerful midfield player Jordon Mutch and it would take huge bid for either to prise them away. Scottish international Marshall, who is under contract with City until 2018, has made it clear he is not looking for a move away and it would probably take a bid of £10m-plus to tempt owner Vincent Tan. Both Spurs and Arsenal have been linked

Mutch, too, is a key player in Solskjaer’s plans for the 2014-15 season and the Bluebirds boss will do everything possible to ensure he stays.

City also have a number of young players, including newly-signed senior professionals Tom James and Rhys Healey plus Kadeem Harris, Ben Nugent, Adedeji Oshilaja and more who will continue to play mainly at under-21 development level.

Scottish international Cowie could also be moving on. He is out of contract at Cardiff, but has been offered a new deal. That hasn’t been accepted yet and with Rangers, Watford, Blackburn and Huddersfield among those keen to sign Cowie he looks likely to move on.

Frazier is going of his own accord so not much we can do. However I've always likes Nicky Maynard. So gutted for him when he first joined. He started the season very well and looked sharp. Would have been a great asset but that injury f#cked him. I'd keep him as an option. Rest can go for sure.

We will probably see a cull of players spread over the next couple of windows hopefully. I don't think this trend of 8 in 8 out is the best way forward it could be too unsettling for the squad. Would like to see the likes of healy Harris and nugent given some game time early in the season rather than loaned out.
