Cringeworthy, trying to compare football to being in the military.
All this military worship makes me cringe as well - I'm glad we've got armed forces to protect us but at the same time, this 'respect the soldiers/all soldiers are heroes' stuff gets embarrassing in my opinion.
I will say on the England front though, that if a player can't be bothered playing for his country, then do the decent thing, be honest and just retire from international duty...

No, you misunderstood what I was saying.
I reiterate - I'm GLAD we've got armed forces to be proud of, but at the same time, those guys are doing their jobs and they're paid for it, not forced into it. So when people come out and start demanding that soldiers be paid more than anyone else etc, it gets my goat. I don't believe that being a soldier automatically makes you a hero, as the Sun would have you believe...

Do you know how much soldiers earn? I doubt it as you would then not say such stupid uneducated comments.
A private soldier (trained not recruit) earns less than a nurse, police, ambulance person does when they are untrained just starting work. These people seem to get called heroes a lot in the Mirror and Guardian but do nothing dangerous. Infact pay, terms of employment are unbelievable with no real responsibility or accountability, compared to that of a soldier.
Compare a soldiers pay to that of a civil servant or local council employee (almost wrote worker then) and you would soon want the armed forces getting more pay. Without their protection we would not be safe in our own country and free to write what we want.

The OP wants to be thankful enough people do sign up, otherwise there would be conscription or at least a period of compulsary military service.
The soldiers dont have a say on why they fight, they just follow orders......orders which can result in their death.

you're getting a pasting here mate but im gonna stick my neck out and say i agree with you.
i have the utmost respect for the armed forces. let me just say that first.
but the way people treat them like gods make me cringe. it seems to give them a pass.
if an iraqi murders a soldier out there then there would be outrage (there usually is, especial due to the brutal way they tend to carry out these exacutions). yet when i british soldier or 3 murder an iraqi (out side of a combat situation where there is no danger to them) then it seems most people say "well they're soliders...its fine" which to me is shocking.
what is even worse is the fact that soldiers and the army seem to get used to emotionally manipulate people in to agreeing with far right groups like britain first. it sickens me when they use images of lee rigby even when the family have told them not to.
i respect the soldiers for what they do and they should be paid a more and they should have the right gear...that's a must, but God like status is a little bit too far in my eyes, and thats what they get from many corners.
