My Chile 'rebels' can win the World Cup, declares Cardiff City star Gary Medel

Monday June 22nd 2014

By Paul Abbandonato

Cardiff City's colourful midfielder believes he can conquer the world just weeks after being relegated from the Premier League

' Cardiff City chairman insists Gary Medel could stay at Bluebirds '

Gary Medel has been a World Cup sensation

Gary Medel believes he can make up for his Cardiff City relegation misery by leading Chile to sensational World Cup success in Brazil.

The Bluebirds midfield dynamo helped the Chilean upstarts dump holders Spain out of the tournament and tonight shoots for top spot in Group B against the Netherlands.

The winners of that clash will almost certainly avoid playing hosts Brazil in the last 16 and thus have an easier path towards the semi-finals.

Medel is adamant the Chile dream has only just begun, and reckons the team dubbing themselves ‘the rebels’ of the tournament can target not only the last four, but even go on to lift the trophy in the Rio final on July 13.

“We don’t have conformity in our team. We plan to make history with this side,” declared Medel, who plays at centre-back for his country.

“This is a very good generation that we have. We hope to reach the semi-finals, even the final itself to be crowned champions.

“We want to be champions and we have the ability to do so. We’re going to fight for everything on the pitch, by going for goals, goals and more goals.

“We will continue playing the same way we have. That’s our style and it will be reflected on the pitch.”

Medel’s national manager Jorge Sampaoli said: “We have a chance to see if this is the best Chile team but that is something we can only say after the tournament is over.

“We were very courageous in the way that we played against Spain and you could say that we are the rebels of this tournament.”

Medel’s hopes of avoiding a knockout clash with hosts Brazil have been boosted by the absence of Netherlands skipper Robin van Persie tonight through suspension.

could be doesnt have be grease lightning as he does read game very well especially for chile. notice he mostly plays ball forward! for us because he played just in front back 4 he could only go side ways or back because of malkies tactics! far better than is given credit for. :old:

What's this fascination with speed?

Not likening him to anyone before you start...but Pirlo manages without speed he in fact barely ever runs with the ball.

Merterstacker manages just fine too.

The slow bit you can't argue with which us why he is not suited to premier league.

You'd be better off cashing in without a doubt , good on the ball but mire suited to la liga

Played very well today but it showed that Chile lack the pace and height at the back which Holland exposed.

He's too small!!

People on here saying he had a good game today. He had good moments interspersed by very indifferent periods IMHO.

Let's just be real here. He was too good for us but not good enough to be a world beater. Just saying.

Ok, but nothing special. Spent most of his time today whingeing at the ref. Glad the Dutch won.

You really think that during the course of last season he proved himself too good for us? - I thought he was a major disappointment.

He don't look overweight or unfit for Chile.
Agree we overpaid for him.
He is a good player just think we were the wrong team for him wrong tactics and not enough quality around him.
I think he would do well in the prem for a better team defo worthy of a place in a top 8 team.
