' A change of mind by Everton and now in pole position for Steven Caulker '

Everton now Lead Race For In Demand Defender

MARVYN WILSON SUNDAY JUNE 22 2014 .

Everton are said to be in pole position for the signature of Cardiff defender Steven Caulker, despite interest from the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal.

Everton recently denied they were interested, but it now seems they are and only recently Caulker's agent had talks with Liverpool which failed to materialise and his agent will now meet with Everton next week.

After the inexplicable move of Steven Caulker from Tottenham to Cardiff (why would they want rid of him?), Cardiff’s eventual relegation from the Premier League has led to a whole host of clubs being linked with the young defender including Arsenal, Liverpool and Swansea.

However, according to The Daily Express, Everton are the team most likely to capture the young Englishman. Roberto Martinez is looking for a defensive partner for Phil Jagielka, with the ageing Sylvain Distin likely to retire in the near future.

A move to Everton would represent a higher certainty of first team football than Arsenal or Liverpool; while their Europa League inclusion would put them ahead of the mid table teams like Swansea and Crystal Palace, who have also shown interest.

Caulker could represent a great investment for whoever is lucky enough to get him but, at 22, he still needs some development in his game.

Although a strong and mature central defensive figure, Caulker is not without his weaknesses. His ability to play the ball out from the back needs work and he is more likely to play a long ball than build up a passing game. His tackling also needs to be improved with stats showing he only won 58% of his challenges last season, a number that must be improved greatly

On the positive side his disciplinary record is exemplary, with only 1 yellow card for the whole of last season. This is a direct result of the fact that Caulker does not rush into challenges, he is very perceptive and does not take unnecessary risks. He also chipped in with 5 goals, a great return for a centre back over the course of 1 season.

Still not the finished article but a great catch for whoever lands him as he is young and has bags of potential. The right team could also mould him into a future starter for the national team and, as recent evidence has shown, that is definitely what England needs.

"(Why would they want rid of him?)"

Who wrote this piece? They do realise that we were relegated, do they?
