Cardiff City hopeful David Marshall will remain at club despite interest from Premier League big-hitters
Friday Jun 20, 2014

By Chris Wathan

The Bluebirds are thought to have received enquiries for the Scottish shot-stopper but there is real hope they can hold on to him

Cardiff City remain hopeful David Marshall will be playing it for keeps with the Bluebirds next season – despite him being tipped for a big-money summer move.

Marshall’s heroics in goal were not enough to keep Cardiff in the Premier League last term but still wowed plenty of potential suitors with his performances at the top level.

The 29-year-old has been linked with a string of clubs this summer following on from his attention-grabbing campaign, Southampton becoming the latest name said to be eyeing up the Scotland international.

And Arsenal have been widely reported to be weighing up a sizeable bid for City’s No.1 having seen the former Celtic star branded a £15m player.

But while the Bluebirds have been bracing themselves for an offer that could see Marshall move on from South Wales, WalesOnline understands no club has yet stepped forward to table a formal bid for City’s player of the season.

It is thought there have been enquiries for the 11-cap ace, although it is not clear which clubs have made their interest known to Bluebirds officials.

But there is a real hope at Cardiff City Stadium that Marshall will stay on for next season’s attempt at an instant return to the Premier League, with sources close to the player confirming Marshall would be happy to remain a City player for the coming Championship campaign.

The boost comes just 24 hours after Cardiff chairman Mehmet Dalman revealed he was ready to hold onto World Cup star Gary Medel while saying the Chilean had given no indication he wanted to quit the club.

And Cardiff have already appeared to have batted away Sunderland interest in midfielder Jordon Mutch, standing firm after he was revealed to be on Gus Poyet’s wish-list given his importance to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s plans for next season.

The Norwegian also sees Marshall, a senior pro popular in the dressing room, as a key man who could help the club back out of the second-tier and there are no plans to cash-in on the in-demand star.

Marshall’s form last season saw him rewarded by Solskjaer who handed him a fresh contract that ties the Scot to the club until 2018.

Cardiff are aware their determination to keep hold of Marshall will be tested if a offer matching their valuation is made before the start of the season.

But it is thought Marshall will not agitate for a move away given he is settled in South Wales after arriving on a free from Norwich in 2009 and knows he would not be guaranteed first-team football if he was to jump clubs.

Club seem to be prostituting the big players in terms of transfer fee this week. Most of them I'll be glad to see go, but marshy has to stay. Big test of loyalty by big dave and particularly the club who owe him big time.

How many times

He's happy at the club, he's settled here, his family are settled here. He's guaranteed number one here and with his new contract probably one of the big earners here at the club.

Plus all these moves are just paper talk, would Arsenal really pay 9m for a back-up keeper whose 29? No. He's staying

The players can do what they want, BUT our chairman is prostituting our players for a move. Come and get them pleas all over the place.
