Cardiff City chairman Mehmet Dalman insists Gary Medel has given him NO indication he wants to leave
Thursday Jun 19, 2014

By Paul Abbandonato

Amid speculation that Gary Medel will leave Cardiff City, chairman Mehmet Dalman insists 'he's our player and as far as I’m concerned he wants to continue with us.'

Cardiff City chairman Mehmet Dalman insists the Bluebirds still want Chile World Cup sensation Gary Medel to help them win promotion back to the Premier League.

The £11million Cardiff midfield dynamo is thought to have played his last game in a City shirt after being heavily linked with a number of foreign clubs.

Spanish quartet Valencia, Sevilla, Getafe and Celta Vigo want Medel, while Turks Besiktas are also keen on securing his services.

But Dalman maintains Medel is a Cardiff City player under contract who is doing the club proud at the World Cup... and insists he can continue to be a Bluebird after Brazil 2014 is over.

Medel played a starring role at centre-back as Chile beat holders Spain and Australia to secure their passage to the knockout stages.

Dalman said: “I thought Gary was magnificent, man of the match against Spain. What he demonstrated yet again is that he is a quality player and one we want to keep at our club.

“I hope that once this tournament is over, he will choose to stick around and help us try to regain our place in the Premier League. I’ve had no indication whatsoever from Gary that he may want to go.”

Dalman continued: “People may say that Gary is too good for the Championship. But then we’ve got lots of players who are good enough to play in the Premier League.

“I’ve no doubts that after what Gary has been doing in this World Cup, there will be interested parties out there.

“But he is under contract to Cardiff City and sometimes it’s not necessarily about the League you play in, it’s about the club you play for and their ambition.

“We’ve made six summer signings already and have set out our stall to try to regain instant promotion.

“Mats Moller Daehli, for example, could move back into the Premier League tomorrow, but he’s made a conscious decision to want to play for Cardiff and help get us back up.

“We aim to make ourselves the sort of club where it is difficult for players to want to leave. If they see ambition and share in what we want as a club, they will stick around.”

Medel’s stock has risen as a result of his performances for Chile in Brazil and Dalman says he is aware of a glut of foreign clubs being linked with the Bluebirds midfield warrior.

But asked if he will sit down and discuss Medel’s future with him, Dalman replied: “Look, there’s nothing for me to talk about in that respect. Gary’s our player and as far as I’m concerned he wants to continue with us.

“After what he's been doing out in Brazil, there may well be a few offers on the table at the end of the tournament.

"If so, and Gary comes to me and says he wishes to leave, I will engage in those discussions then.

"But even if that were to be the case, I think it’s fair to say I’m not known as a pushover in negotiations. I’m not in the habit of selling anything at a loss."

He's basically pushing up Medel's value, saying we aren't going to sell him cheap.

Ding ding ding we have a winner.

If we didn't know he was leaving we wouldn't have replaced him already.

“We’ve made six summer signings already and have set out our stall to try to regain instant promotion."

We know who the five are:- Guerra, Burgstaller, Macheda, La Fondre and Dickagcoi (sp?). But who is the sixth player that we have signed??? Have i missed another signing? Or was it just a mis-print or a mis-quote from the Newspaper Reporter?

If we dont lose marshall caulk er medal and campbell its something if we keeo any of the 3 outfield players its a success

For me Marshall, Caulker, Medel should be gone, let them go while the money is high, if we can get close for 20m for those then we are laughing as next season as championship players the value will drop dramatically and we will still be paying the big wages.

Will be sad to see Marshall go though.

Would love him to stay if he lost a stone and 10 grand a week, but not gonna happen

I suppose we could just possibly hang on to him until Jan if we can't get what we think its worth.I think he would do very well at this level and quite possibly make us a force too good for this level.Anyway I thought Medal have a relegation clause in his contract anyway.

Besic? Hope he signed him before the world cup. Man of the match for bosnia against argentina where he quite effectively man marked messi. Bound to be lots of interest in him.

Just thought that the deal is already done, being that our chairman has stated that we have signed 6 players already, I can only count 5, so maybe he let slip about a sixth one that we have already signed, or a pre-contract, City seem to like those type of deals
