Southampton eye David Marshall transfer from Cardiff to strengthen keeper options

Scotland international whose often-sensational form was not enough to save the Welsh club from relegation is wanted to challenge Boruc.
David Marshall may be back in the top flight next season with Southampton
New Southampton boss Ronald Koeman is ready to offer Cardiff goalkeeper David Marshall a Premier League lifeline.
The Saints are on the lookout for a new keeper to rival Artur Boruc for the No.1 jersey at St Mary’s.
Scotland international Marshall could not prevent Cardiff from being relegated last season, but he impressed with a string of fine displays.
And Koeman has been promised a bumper transfer kitty to revamp the Saints squad he has inherited from Mauricio Pochettino.
Koeman said: “We will always try to have better players to do something better than last season and we look forward to a great period.”
Meanwhile, Sam McQueen has signed a new four-year deal with Southampton.
Local lad McQueen, 19, came off the bench to make his first-team debut during Saints’ 1-0 defeat to Sunderland in the FA Cup.
The winger is set to become a regular in Koeman’s squad next season.

Ronald Koeman eyes his first signing at Southampton
Thursday June 19th 2014.
He has not been in his new job for very long at all, but Ronald Koeman is already being linked with a notable transfer during the summer window, according to reports in the English press. Cardiff City’s David Marshall is rumoured to be on the Saints’ radar, as they look to provide their goalkeeper, Artur Boruc with some top quality competition.
Marshall greatly impressed last season, despite his heroics between the posts not being enough to save a dismal Cardiff City. He has been linked with a range of Premier League clubs until now, including Arsenal, but Southampton are keen to edge ahead in the race to sign him.
Boruc is their current number one, but there is a revolution occurring at Southampton now that Koeman has taken charge, and he has earmarked Boruc’s position as one in which he needs his options strengthened. After so much doom and gloom coming from Saint Mary’s in terms of player departures, the latest news will be a welcome break from routine for fans of the south coast side.
It remains to be seen, however, whether Marshall will favour a move which might not see him immediately inherit first team football. The ‘keeper, who is 29, enjoyed his best run of form last season, and he will not believe that he has any more time to waste in his career, playing second choice to another player.
