The 22-year-old defender is looking to get back in the Premier League after current club Cardiff were relegated

Crystal Palace boss Tony Pulis will spark a new war with Cardiff City by bidding £8million for Steven Caulker, writes Alan Nixon in the Sunday People.

Relegated Bluebirds are still at loggerheads with the Eagles over an alleged leak of team news before the two teams met in the Premier League last season. Although the ill feeling still festers, there is nothing Cardiff can do to stop Palace luring England centre-half Caulker.

The former Tottenham man has a fixed fee in his contract – believed to be £8m – so all Palace have to do to net the big defender is match that figure.

Caulker has been linked with moves away from the Welsh capital since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side went down but Palace are the first to get serious.

The England man is one of several big names on Pulis’s shopping list.

Caulker’s old Spurs team-mate Jake Livermore, on loan at Hull last term, is also wanted and Palace are prepared to pay Tottenham the £6.5m they are asking.

Can't see him moving there tbh, but he is kind of a Pulis player.

Crystal Palace Set To Meet Steven Caulker’s £8 Million Release Clause?

It is being reported in this morning’s Mirror, that Crystal Palace will make a move for Cardiff’s central defender Steven Caulker in the coming weeks.

The 22-year-old, who only signed for the Bluebirds last season in what was thought to be a new record transfer fee for the Welsh club, is supposedly desperate to return to the Premier League, with Tony Pulis and co. apparently the first party to show serious interest in offering him a way back.

Whilst there is supposedly still a great deal of bad blood between the two clubs, stemming from Vincent Tan’s accusations that his former employee Iain Moody spied on the Welsh side in the build up to our visit there last season, the story in the Mirror claims that a release clause of £8 million exists in Caulker’s contract now that the Bluebirds have been relegated to the second tier, forcing them to accept the offer of any club who are willing to meet the valuation.

Caulker, who played all 38 of Cardiff’s league games last season, scoring five goals in the process, had previously spent four years with Tottenham Hotspur, where he managed to play just 18 times, alongside a number of loan moves.

With Palace having released Danny Gabbidon, we are now left with only Damien Delaney, Scott Dann and Paddy McCarthy as recognised central defenders in the squad, making the acquisition of a new recruit a near certainty over the summer months.

In Steven Caulker, Tony Pulis would have found a player very well suited to his defensive style, disciplined, strong and hard working, the England international would no doubt fit in straight away in South London, with the only question being who if either of the current central defensive partnership he would replace in the starting XI.

Admittedly, £8 million sounds like a large sum, particularly when coupled with the supposed £6.5 million we’re willing to pay for Jake Livermore’s services, but with a second Premier League season now secure, the club’s accounts are looking as healthy as they ever have, offering the opportunity to step up the spending somewhat without having to worry about impending doom in the shape of administration.

The clubs he's being linked to are gradually becoming worse. He'll be linked to Burnley for £5m in a couple of weeks!

Far more honorable if he made an effort to return to the PL with the Bluebirds ! Isn't he due a loyalty payment if he stays until the end of June !?

Don't forget spurs got a 50 % sell on clause on anything over 8 million.
