Southampton manager hunt continues as Mackay is sounded out
By Warren Haughton June 13, 2014

Southampton have sounded out Malky Mackay about taking over at St Marys.

Mackay, 42, has been out of work since he was sacked by Cardiff City last December. The Scot looked set to take over at relegated Norwich City last month and was on the shortlist to succeed Neil Lennon at Celtic before Ronny Delia was handed the role.

The Saints are keen to recruit a new boss as soon as possible, following the departure of Mauricio Pochettino to Spurs, and Michael Laudrup, ex-Celtic boss Lennon and former Tottenham manager Tim Sherwood have all been linked with the vacancy.

But it could be tough for whoever takes up the role on the South coast with players like Adam Lallana, Luke Shaw, Jay Rodriguez, and Dejan Lovren who recently handed in a transfer request, likely to leave this summer.

Would be surprised; if only because Southampton are renowned for their flowing, attacking football :o

Would be a coup for him IF it were to come off, though and good luck to him

Not a big enough name for them.

I'm on the pro-mackay side of things (also pro solksjaer) and I think he'll take a run of the mill job at a championship club and build from the bottom up again.

I really am amazed by the anti Malky venom on times.

Yes, I didn't like his brand of football to watch and yes I expected us to get relegated from prem however,

As a manager, you start with trying not to concede and build from defence. Malky tried this to win championship.

In the premier he new it would be tough so got in caulker, Medel, brayford then ktc. Again trying to build from defence.

Trouble is, the rest of the team were still championship, including the purchases. The premier is unforgiving and not scoring or forcing other teams back only invites pressure.
Constant defending and form of ktc, medel took its toll.
If, corner was a sensation, Frazier had help, we pushed up on times and scored more we could have
won or drawn some of our gallant battling early season games.

Only time will tell if malky learns :ayatollah:

Apart from their free flowing football they are also known for spending big in the summer, put the two of these together and it equals absolutely no chance what so ever that they will bring in mackay as manager, the only way he will manage again in the premiership is if he takes a team up from the lower divisions.

You've answered your own question in that sentence, malky had £50 million to play with and apart from caulker he brought in very average players who were vastly overpriced and in general were totally out of their comfort zone/depth.

Southampton are set to appoint experienced Dutchman Ronald Koeman as their new manager, according to Sky Sports.

They specified they wanted a good manager with a good philosophy, so why is this a surprise

No chance at all. He wouldn't even be on their radar. I'd be very surprised if Malky ever manages in the Premier League again

Can't see that happening, surely they want someone to take the team forward with the playing style they have got, not go back to defensive long ball. Hope they don't, I like Southampton.
