The ref for the Brazil/Croatia game
Worse than any ref we had in the Prem.
Totally unfair on Croatia.

I imagine we'll see a lot of decisions like that. I really hate the refereeing in these tournaments.

He's a homer. No doubt about that. The pressure on him must be massive though. Imagine if Brazil fail to get thru group stage!!!!!

Whether you call it corruption or human bias, one eyed refs kill the sport.
Perhaps the Croatians could blame the pitch

Blame the players not the ref, they get a one time view on the incident. It's the modern game now. Players will do anything to gain an advantage. Need to start banning if caught cheating, that's the only way you're going to cut it out.

I agree and they could use shirts that rip if pulled and transfer a dye if a player is pushed. The technology is there to do this, but I just can't see it happening.

Old Sebb Blatter must of said host's must win opening game at all costs

Totally Agree with this.....I would also add that we (fans) accept it as well so must take some of the blame.

Was wondering that myself at some points. Thought the pen was a tough decision... did he pull him? Yes! Did he pull him hard enough? Probably not. Was it a pen? Tough one!
The throws given the wrong way we're an odd one though

I thought he was poor for both teams, how many nasty tackles the Croats put in and no bookings, neymar elbow never a sending off yellow at most. Penalty was really soft but the Croat defender shouldn't have pulled on Fred's shoulder he would go down all day long like any striker in modern football would...

It was a horrendous decision, a shame the referee decided to cheat and ruin the game. Poor Croatia now know how the dozen smaller Premiership teams feel every week.

Saying the ref cheated is a bit strong, Neymar yellow was correct decision, penalty was soft however the defender pulled on Fred's shoulder...

Oh come on! If the referee gives the penalty, to be consistent, he would have to blow his whistle for every time a player touches his opponent and the game would still be getting played now. It was never a penalty, everyone could see that. The referee cheated.

100% spot on. For a game of this importance, the biggest world stage, first game of the tournament with a mega audience it appears as though a top official was not picked. You would have thought that FIFA would have appointed a top ref for such an important game. They would not want any controversy to start the World Cup. Saying that what were the other officials doing?
It is a shame that the game was ruined with numerous poor decisions. All the major ones went for Brazil and against Croatia.

Referinho!
Fri Jun 13, 2014 1:23 pm
I actually thought the ref had a good game up until the penalty decision. It was refreshing to see a World Cup ref not dishing out yellow cards every time a player fell over. Are we too used to the card happy refs of the EPL?
Maybe a more poignant question is how much longer the authorities will put up with players deliberately conning the referee? Maybe if this was addressed then less pressure would be put on the guy in the middle and we should see the standard of refereeing improve.

Fifa are totally corrupt.... is it such a leap to imagine the corruption goes further?
Neymar should of walked and that pen was hilariously bad.

I thought the Croation coach summed it up well after the match when he said"whats the point of turning up if its gonna be like that"or something along those lines.Calling the ref a cheat is childish though-just had a bit of a mare

It hit the back of the net didn't it! I don't know how people can criticise when they haven't taken a pen in front of more than a billion people!

I meant the decision not the execution!

He had...I actually phoned my Dad at half time and said that the Ref was allowing the game to flow. That's what made the decision all the more shocking though. He had ignored far stronger challenges but then couldn't wait to give the penalty for an innocuous/nothing touch of the shoulder. All the major decisions went to Brazil. The ref is under enormous pyschological pressure from FIFA, the sponsors and the capitalist companies ploughing their money into this tournament, to get Brazil through at all costs.
