The real reason why we are still RED

Vincent Tan

The man is blinded by his culture and traditions - yet he denies us our culture and traditions?

I think that Vincent Tan now realises that he made a massive mistake by not consulting fans and by just pushing the rebrand (Red and Badge) BUT he is constrained by his tradition and cultural beliefs.

Most people from South east Asia are very culturally aware and grow up, rightly or wrongly, with strong views and superstitions.

They include:-

Lucky number 8 - did you know that you can buy a mobile SIM card in a shop in Malaysia and the price of that SIM card, of equal monetary value, costs more to buy dependent on the number of lucky 8's contained within the phone number ??? (eg - a $10 phone card SIM with number 0255617322 will be sold for $10. BUT a $10 phone card SIM with number 0285188432 would be sold for $17) :?

The number 4 - is avoided like the plague as its a sign of bad luck. You will not find many houses with the number 4 hanging over the door, they would rather change it to number 3A or 5B.

Red and/or Yellow are colours of fortune and good luck.

Blue and Black are colours of death and bad luck.

Pregnant women should place a knife under their bed,to protect their unborn baby from evil spirits.

And many, many more complex superstitions prevail.

But, "saving face" dwarfs all the others, and this I do believe is the reason why we are still Red with a laughable Mickey mouse badge and why Vincent Tan will never turn us back to Blue and original badge, while he is the Boss.

Of all the idiosyncrasies of Malaysian culture, the concept of “Face” is perhaps most difficult for us Westerners to fully grasp. And because “saving face” is such a strong motivating force in Malaysia, it’s also one of the most important concepts in understanding the Malaysian Mind.

The closest translations are along the lines of “pride”, “dignity” or “prestige”.

Of course, no one — regardless of culture—wants to look bad or have their ego bruised. But the Malaysian concept goes way beyond the narrow Western concept of "Saving Face".

Sorry to bring up the Rebrand thing again, just trying to answer "Dorsetblue's" question. And any of us who cling on to the hope that under Mr Tan we will be a blue club again.

Sad but true I am afraid.

From what I've heard it was someone Welsh but external to the club who advised tan to go red and someone internal who has just left who advised him to keep it. Same internal person also advised on the golden ticket scam and scarf gate. Seems we had a bit of a snake in the grass who likes to stitch up those above him.... ridsdale, lim, tan. Hmmmmm wonder what their long game was? Wonder why they used to leak things to this board that wasn't true? Or who wasn't telling the truth? Curioser and curioser!

so many people are convinced he is money orientated....but this in itself { the loss of millions in merch rev}.proves otherwise..........

Yeah, I agree. My wife is Korean and they have a similar outlook regarding losing face. NEVER admit they're wrong. In general that is, not my wife!

4 is unlucky because in Chinese it is the word for death. In lifts in Korea the numbers go 1-2-3-F-5-6-7 etc.

That's not necessarily because she is Korean. It could be because she is female and married. Lol.

Seriously though, Eastern culture is very superstitious ax you say.

Re: The real reason why we are still RED

Tan will never change us back to blue. Asians such as the Japanese, Chinese, Malaysians, Koreans and so forth would rather fall on their sword than admit defeat or that they were wrong. Stubborn, mentally strong people who won't give in unless its in their interests and they can win the long game and maintain status. They also have an insane work ethic and often work all day and hit the casinos at night with very little sleep. Their ways are hard wired into them through their cultural upbringing. They work hard, play hard, value status and symbols and are ruthless if you try to take them for a mug.

The more you push Tan the more he will resist and do as he pleases. The only to get blue back is to get him out and to take the consequences that come as part of that.

Whilst Tan is here we remain red. Returning back to blue would be of massive embarrassment for him in China and he would be mocked for giving in and not showing who is the boss and in charge.

He's not reneged on it though. People are just pushing that line of thought and this idea of tan promised it would be done two years ago when none of its true. He said his aim was a debt free club and he never put a time frame on it.

What about your loans into the club? Will you change those into equity?

THE total amount of money I have put in now is £150m.

I have agreed to convert £50m of my total investment into equity. There will be £100m debt remaining.

The club will still owe me £100m, of course, and every month I am still putting money in.

So, how is that a "debt free club"?

He has. :thumbright: how many times do you have to be told? He's confirmed in the press in a video interview that he won't be transferring his debt to equity & leaving a debt free club (as promised) but only converting 50 million. :thumbright:

Maybe if I keep telling you, one day it will sink in.

Did he say he was leaving then? Did he say it was only 50m and he wouldn't do anything further? Did he say his plan to leave the club debt free had changed? Perhaps if you stop listening to the agenda and being blinded by the rebrand you'll read things for what they actually are. You know, like that bbc article you posted previously which contradicted everything you were saying, and you know like ago my posts your purposefully misread.

Maybe if you take the English lessons I suggested you'll learn to read things for what they are

no, but he did say he wouldn't be clearing all of the debt. :thumbright:

yes. Maybe it's you who needs these English lessons...

he said he won't be transferring all debt to him to equity, so I guess that means it has changed. :thumbright:

I don't listen to any agenda, I have my own free thoughts, which have always been the same. Maybe if you weren't blinded by the money. I've posted a fantastic link which disproves your claims. Direct quote saying he wouldn't be transferring all the debt to equity.
