Arsenal reportedly ready to make £8m bid for Cardiff City goalkeeper David Marshall

By Omar HamoudaPosted on June 10, 2014

Arsenal are set to make a move for Cardiff City goalkeeper David Marshall in an £8 million swoop, as they look to provide Wojciech Szczesny with some competition.

One of the goalkeepers of the year, Marshall has been the subject of intense transfer speculation and Arsene Wenger is reportedly keen on bringing the Scotsman to north London. Marshall has excelled at the Welsh side this season, but after having been relegated it seems Vincent Tan will be aiming to offload his highest earners in order to reduce the wage bill.

Marshall signed a new four-year contract in February, however, he is willing to move for pastures new to test himself at the highest level and to allow himself to claim the number one spot for Scotland, according to the Express.

Arsenal are ready to make an £8 million move for Marshall, particularly after offloading back-up goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski to Swansea City. The Gunners have missed out on Iker Casillas and despite still having Victor Valdes on their radar, they have focused their attentions on Marshall.

Tottenham are also chasing Marshall, with the Lilywhites providing their rivals with stiff competition.

£8 million is a fair amount for a goal keeper but a goal keeper of his quality I think we could get as much as £10 million if we really tried
Also I would only like to see him go if we 100% invest the money into a new player/s, otherwise it seems a huge unnecessary loss

8 million is a lot for a keeper with 1 years premiership experience. We should hold out for 10 million if we can. However 8 million will clear some of our debt to the vile dictator.

I wouldn't be surprised to see him still with you next season as I don't realistically see any clubs forking out the sort of figures that have been banded about on a 'keeper that, as Gareth says, has one years PL experience in a side where he had an awful lot of opportunities to look good.

As we discussed last night Annis, I would be surprised if Marshall accepted a move to be the back up choice, really do hope that we get to keep him. :bluescarf:

And £8m a drop in the proverbial ocean IF we were to go back up and Marshall played his part again!

8m he can go with my best wishes.
I doubt he would turn it down and no reason to think he would be number 2 at arsenal.

Some of the numbers being thrown around on here are ridiculous, we will have to accept that bid and see what happens.

Tan wants a straight bounce back to the PL and as little as he knows about football, I would have thought that Marshall's universal plaudits and top-tier interest would confirm that he would be a key part of our push, so why get rid of for £8m at this stage? We know that Marshall likes his families quality of life here and he will not want to be second fiddle at this stage of his career. I would have also thought that Marshall knows that we stand a reasonable chance of promotion and would give it another season. He's become a talisman for us and is the one player that I would hate to see leave.

12 million not a penny less and he would easily be number one goalkeeper at Arsenal or any other top premier league club. Hopefully he stays with us though and helps us win promotion again

Doesn't Arsen Wenger play hell with other teams when his valuations aint met what a hypocrate he is he's been told our Valuation is £15m so he offers £8m why dont we start making pathetic bids for his players like £2m for Ramsey or £1m for Vermaelen see what he has to say then

8 Million is good money for a keeper who could not even score a goal :laughing6:

Sitting on the bench won't do his Scotland chances much good. Alan McGregor plays week in, week out, for Hull. Marshall needs regular, first team football.

He doesn't particularly want to go. We don't really need to sell. We hold the cards here. Who knows what Cardiff really value him at. It may be £10m it may be higher. If no one meets the figure he stays. Potential buyers can see that this is the case. If they really want him they will pay stupid money even if he isn't worth it. Look at Joe Allen. Was it one season in the prem? Never worth £15m but Brenda wanted him so bad.

Strange that arsenal would spend 8 mil on a back up keeper

He can be the difference between 6th and 2nd place. I really really hope he stays. 8 mill is 7 mill short imo, and I really can't see Gunners put enough money on the table.
