Cowie is next on McCoist's Rangers hit list
ALLY McCOIST is hoping to make ex- Scotland midfield ace Don Cowie his next summer signing.

Matthew Lindsay

Don Cowie is in the mind of McCoist

And the Rangers boss is also optimistic of strengthening his squad further by landing striker Kris Boyd AND defender Darren McGregor.

Both Boyd and McGregor have been heavily linked with moves to Ibrox in recent weeks with the pair out of contract after spells with Kilmarnock and St Mirren respectively.

However, Cowie, who played for Cardiff City in the Barclays Premier League last season, is an ambitious new target for the Light Blues.

Cardiff boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is desperate to keep the 31-year-old and has offered him a lucrative contract.

Solskjaer wants the former Ross County and Inverness Caledonian Thistle player to help the Bluebirds get promoted out of the Sky Bet Championship.

Cowie, who was targeted by former Rangers boss Walter Smith back in 2009, was a key member of the Cardiff team that won promotion to the top flight last year.

But the attacking player, who has been capped 10 times by his country, is currently weighing up his options.

Rangers have already made contact with a man they feel can help them pip Hearts and Hibs to the Championship title - and a third straight promotion - next season.

The Inverness-born star, who previously played for Watford in England, has spent over five years down south. And he may be keen on a return to his homeland at this stage in his career.

Rangers made their first signing of the close season last week when Kenny Miller put pen to paper for the third time.

And chief executive Graham Wallace has stressed that more new players will join the Scotland international in the coming weeks.

That is despite ongoing speculation about how many season tickets the SPFL League One champions have sold.

The Union of Fans - an umbrella group comprising six supporters' organisations - has been urging followers not to renew.

They want to be given security over Ibrox and Murray Park in return for the cash.

And no official announcement has been made to the Stock Exchange on how many Gers fans have signed up for the 2014/15 campaign.

However, speaking to the official Rangers website, Wallace said: "Things are going well.

"We spent some time with Alistair working out what he wanted to do with the squad for next season.

"We've announced the signing of Kenny Miller, who is joining the club for the third time, and we are delighted about that.

"We have several other things we are in the process of working on so I think the fans can expect to see some further new faces coming to the club in the near future."

Boyd formed a lethal strike partnership with Miller in his previous stint at Rangers and the return of his friend to Ibrox is believed to have increased his desire to sign.

I would let him go. A solid and versatile player and seemingly true professional who I can't remember complaining when picked out of position or left out but long term what is he going to provide us. Clear the decks with a lot of the current squad I say.

I liked Cowie in his first season here but I think it's time for him to move on, I don't think he can bring us anything anymore, other than defensive negative style of play, as we have better in his position. All the best to him if he does move on. I personally feel that he is waiting for Malky to get a club and then he's off, son of Malky and all that

If he wants to go, good luck to him. He has been a good servant to the club and this move would be back to his national roots. He can leave with his head held high and I for one wish him every success north of the border, both for club and country!!!

Re: ' Rangers want Cardiff City Star '

he's a good player would rather keep him as he is good to bring off the bench when trying to see out a game

Re: ' Rangers want Cardiff City Star '

He's done well for us, Don Cowie. Good player, and a top professional. If he fancies a move to Ibrox, then all the best of luck to him. Would be a good signing for Rangers. Ally McCoist is obviously planning ahead for their return to the SPL the season after next.

Can't help feeling, though, that Don is a bit too good for the Scottish Championship. Think he's from the highlands, though I might be wrong. No obvious Old Firm connections, but playing for either club would do his Scotland chances no harm at all.

No sign of Malky getting a club yet, and Don's contract is up for renewal.

First one gone for me, after the little chat we had
bumped into him when they were on their way to Newcastle, asked him how they think they would get on. he shrugged his shoulders and said "well..... we hope we can. see how it goes"
i said shouldn't you be more positive.

"well if we were positive, we wouldn't be were we are."

Nice one Cowie, on your bike my friend!

Fair enough if he wants to go let him go. . But I am angry with this "squad clear-out" attitude amongst the Cardiff fans. How are we going to get some stability and consistency within our club and team if we keep making so many changes from season to season or from half season to season.
Look at the jack bastards...they still got routs, taylor davies, possibly williams rangel britton , dyer. They dont make drastic changes to the squad. That is why they have matured so much compared to Our club. All we seem to do is try squad...not give them enough time and patience to develop and click together..then panic buy and do a big clearout. We are miles behind our neighbours down the road because of that one reason.
I am sick of the clear-out mentality. And Ole is all for making changes on a regular basis. If he dont stick to a best 11 team and only make changes when necessary with this new team then I am giving up on my club for a while. Even championship we need stability, consistency in squad selection etc.

Hmmm.....
This isn't about the jaxx. It's about getting our team to compete in championship. I don't really see the problem with shedding some players, especially if that is what they want. We will have a job holding on to the likes of Caulker, Medel and even Marshall. We must try but inevitably, they may look for a higher level next season.

By the way, I'm impressed you didn't mention how good looking they are for a change!!!

Why cant we hold onto marshall medel caulker cambell mutch etc? We have a billionaire ownwer. All he has to do is offer twice the amount of wages that a PL club would offer them. Tan is loaded so he can afford the wage increase.
Buy them a brand new sports car each as an insentive to. Pay for free Golf membership. Do anything to tempt them to stay at Cardiff. Personally If Tan sacked Ole before the season and got a decent manager in, then the big players would stay and the transfers in would be much better.

Tan isn't a 'sugar daddy' for CCFC!! He is a businessman who will need a return on his investment. Some of the players you are talking about have release clauses which were triggered when we got demoted so the club can do very little if they want to go and there is a buyer.

If OGS is sacked, that'll be 3 managers in a year. Not good for stability.

I,m not going to say Cowie is world class but he is a true pro , doesn't drink or smoke and I think he is a clever player and not only ahead less chicken as some of you so called fans call him. I think he will come back and probably bite you so called City fans in the bum. But that is only my opinion but I still maintain we have got our fair share of armchair fans!!
