Cardiff City: Four alternative blue fans' shirts for next season - your favourite will be available to buy
Jun 08, 2014

By David Owens

A number of supporters groups are firmly behind the project, which will show the club how strongly fans feel about bringing back the blue

Vote for your favourite alternative blue fans' shirt for next season - and the most popular will be available for you to buy.

As part of its Back to Blue campaign, the South Wales Echo has teamed up with Cardiff City Supporters Trust and sportswear company Kukri Sports to create four designs for an alternative blue fans' shirt for next season.

Now you can vote for your favourite shirt design via the poll on this page. The winning shirt design will then be available to order directly from Kukri Sports online shop with kids shirts costing just £22 and adult sizes priced at £27.

£5 from the sale of every shirt will go to Ty Hafan.

The idea, which is backed by all the major supporters' groups, is the brainchild of trust member and long standing supporter Phil Jones who explained the thinking behind the project.

“It struck me that a lot of fans are disenchanted with the rebrand and the lack of availability of a well designed, good quality, affordable blue shirt. It's clearly also brilliant that such a great charity will benefit.

“I knew the Cardiff City Supporters Trust had their own badge with a bluebird on it. I thought there's the potential there for the Cardiff City Supporters Trust to market their own fans' shirt.

“I floated the idea on social media and there seemed to a be a lot of interest, I received a lot of private messages via messageboards, a lot of supporters liked the idea, so I encouraged people to contact CCST directly themselves to let them know there was support for the idea.

“From there it really snowballed. I met with Tim Hartley (CCST chairman) and he managed to get all the other supporters organisations on board.”

As well as Cardiff City Supporters Trust, firmly behind this project are Cardiff City Supporters Club, Bluebirds Unite, the London-based 1927 Club and Cardiff City messageboards CCMB and Cardiff City Forum, who are all backing the idea.

“Much like the protests that took place at the back end of the season, this is another peaceful way of fans showing their backing for the blue with a well-designed, affordable blue shirt, as opposed to currently what is on offer,” said Phil.

Tim Hartley, the chairman of the supporters trust, added: "It's great to see fans coming together in support of the blue shirt, while also raising money for Ty Hafan. This is a constructive way that fans can show their feelings and we again call for the views of the majority of supporters to be listened to."

Those sentiments were echoed by the leader of Bluebirds Unite, Sian Branson who said: "The blue and bluebird symbolise who we are, we'd love to see the fans wear the shirt with pride and support a great cause."

Kukri Sports, who were recently named as official supplier to the English Commonwealth Games team, have worked closely with the supporters trust and are equally enthusiastic about the plans. Cardiff-based representative Jamie Warwick said: "We are delighted to get involved in such a worthwhile project. It works on so many levels - the fans get a well designed, well made blue shirt and a fantastic local charity benefits. It's a brilliant idea."

The winning design chosen by our readers will be constructed from breathable s-spire performance fabric and will feature a fully woven Cardiff City Supporters Trust badge with Ty Hafan and Supporters Direct logos subtly sublimated on the sleeve. The main body of the blue shirt will be kept 'clean,' in keeping with historic tradition and to emphasise the uniqueness of the shirt.

The poll is open now and will close at 5pm on Friday June 13.

We will announce the winning design and details of how you can purchase the shirt on Monday June 16.

The one without the collar but got yellow for the shoulder area.

Collars on Football shirts are criminal.

Number one is practically a blue shirt with a white collar, I wouldn't buy that as I could easily go out and make my own.

Number 3 for me but would buy 2

Has to be number 1, collars on number 3 are awful

Re: ' Supporters' Shirt '

1 or 3.

Great effort by all those involved.

Also an excellent idea to get a local charity involved.

Looking forward to ordering 3 for the family.

No one is too plain for me, this is a protest shirt it needs to stand out. Number three gets my vote, but if prefer number three with number two's collar.

Will be purchasing regardless.

Agree with most so far.

1 (plain blue with round neck) or 3 (blue with vertical white/yellow stripe) for me too - where and when do we vote?

I wish they had put the rounded collar on shirt 3 as well.

(be careful as the Wales on line have the line up of shirts in a different order to that on here?)

Bluebirds Forever !!! :old: :bluescarf: :bluescarf: :bluescarf: :bluescarf: :bluescarf:

Any chance of getting an Ex city player or players to do a photo shoot for each shirt with Jon Candy ?

Andy Legg, Jason Perry, Nathan Blake, Rob Earnshaw?

For Ty-hafen after all boys. :ayatollah:

I love number 3 but i wish one day when we do return to blue a proper shirt will be made to commemorate that design as its iconic! Don't want to see it being used to often haha. I'd pick 1 i think but I'm not quite sure which one to vote just yet

Re: ' Supporters' Shirt '

Sun Jun 08, 2014 9:54 pm

Number one for me, but I like number three as we'll. Both are traditional and identifiable as Cardiff City shirts.

Re: ' Supporters' Shirt '

Sun Jun 08, 2014 9:54 pm

1 and 3 are great. Number 1 is probably my favourite because it's got a modern look yet classy, looks smart. 3 however is the design of what is probably the most famous in our history.

I'll still be getting the one made by ThomasC from here, but which ever one wins out of 1 and 3 will have to be a Christmas present I think
