" More than 1200 dead! "

Sat Jun 07, 2014 4:21 pm

While Qatar has been in the news for a possible corrupt deal with FIFA to get the 2022 World Cup, the more important story is that more than 1200 people have died working on building the stadiums, which is 464 more than the number of players taking part in this year's World Cup. However, the projected figure is far worse with more than 4000 expected to be killed by the time the venues are completed, working in conditions that are close to slave labour with little or no H + S.

The whole affair has been appalling from the start.
I would say fifa hang your heads in shame, yet they clearly have no shame.

If this is true, then it is nothing short of scandalous,,,,& totally unacceptable.

Such working conditions echo from a time of working conditions in Ancient Egypt & Rome.

This was an eye opening mini-documentary ESPN did a few weeks back on the living conditions of the workers in Qatar. Absolutely disgusting.

With all the money they have, you would think they would improve working conditions for workers. Besides that a World Cup should not and never be held in Qatar, it's just not the right climate that's how it goes. FIFA and sepp blatter make me sick, corrupt mother fukers, the uk will never see a World Cup in our lifetime I bet fukin joke.

I hadn't seen that I had just read about the conditions, but after seeing it I feel even more appalled, if that's possible. I bet if I asked most black footballers if they thought slavery was a good idea I would get punched a few times, yet if they play in the Qatar World Cup they will have helped slavery to take place. It should be compulsive viewing for all professional footballers and all fans, then maybe a boycott will take place.

Hmmmmm that is correct and thought provoking. But with everything money talks whatever colour or race you are.

That is an interesting thought. If it does go ahead in Qatar, I won't be watching it. I knew how bad it was but that video really showed me a lot more. It is slavery no doubt. Shame that FIFA won't do anything because of the bribes they have taken

Amazing! With a title listing 1200 dead I would have expected more hits. I bet if I post a title 'CCFC to change back to blue' there will be more hits.

Although an appalling act it is an isolated incident, whereas what is happening in Qatar is slavery on a national scale. The Brazil incident in a remote part of the country was a fight between a player and referee, which resulted in the fatal stabbing of the player by the referee when the player refused to leave the field after being sent off. The friends and relatives of the player then stoned and beat the referee to death before dismembering the body. The local police chief was right when he said 'One crime will never justify another.'

This documentary is shocking. FIFA lost their credibility long time ago. I really do hope the decision to give Qatar the world cup will be reversed!

It's the U.S. firm CH2M Hill Inc. that is the major contractor - they are the ones who pressure should be put on. As well as companies such as Ove Arup.

There are thousands of engineering and construction companies who could fill their place which would mean it would take forever to lobby all of them. The answer is to lobby the footballers and fans, then one or two major footballing nations and hopefully most will follow. There is the added incentive that most will not want to play their anyway with their summer temperatures.

I have been reading about the kafala system since seeing the vimeo link that Llandaffbluebird1 posted and after many articles I have decided that Dubai will NEVER be on my travel agenda. I have listed one of the articles below:-

Re: " More than 1200 dead! "

Less than 4000 hits for a post about slave like conditions, causing 1200+ deaths in the construction of the Qatar World Cup venues and over 4000 projected deaths. Yet an online squabble with Chopra and Ashley Williams which we don't know the truth about gets over 11000 hits. The mind boggles!

No other engineering company is going to fill their place, it doesn't work like that. The main contractor can't be replaced as easily as you seem to think and they certainly won't pull out of the contract at this stage through choice - it's too lucrative for them (CH2M Hill Inc).
Your don't think it's a good idea to lobby a single entity, however, you advocate lobbying thousands of players/fans and nations?

....I think I know which would be easier.

And Russia being another question.
