A Cardiff fan’s view of Andrew Taylor

Friday June 6th 2014.

Andrew Taylor is the first of Uwe Rosler’s summer signings. The experienced left back still had two more years of his contract remaining at Cardiff City. It is understood that Wigan Athletic have not paid an upfront fee for the 27 year old, but Cardiff will receive a payment if Latics get promotion.

Taylor is an experienced Premier League left back or left midfielder, who was also captain of Cardiff when they won the Championship division in the 2012-13 season. A member of the Middlesbrough team that won the FA Youth Cup in 2004, he was to spend seven years at the north east club, making 125 appearances. He represented England at all age levels, under 16 to under 21. During his time at Middlesbrough he also loan spells at Bradford City and Watford.

Malky Mackay signed Taylor for Cardiff in July 2011, knowing him from their time together at Watford. In his first year he made 44 starts for the Welsh club in the Championship and played in the League Cup final when they were beaten by Liverpool on penalties. The following season he made 43 league appearances, more than any other player, in the team that won the Championship.

When Ole Gunnar Solskjaer replaced Mackay in January, Taylor fell out of favour. He had made 15 Premier League starts under Mackay, but was to make only three more under the Norwegian.

In order to learn more about Taylor’s time at Cardiff we reached out to Benjamin James of the View from the Ninian fan site.

' Here’s over to Benjamin: '

Andrew Taylor came to Cardiff as one of Malky’s first signings. He’d taken him on loan at Watford and, was clearly, a favourite of his. In his first season, he helped Cardiff City to a League Cup final and the playoffs and was solid throughout. He isn’t a spectacular left-back – rather, he’s incredibly solid and will always put in a shift.

He’s good in attack and generally solid in defence; my main criticism of him would be his tendency to back off players when they run at him. I understand why, as Taylor isn’t the quickest, but he needs to make a challenge at some point.

I’ll admit surprise when it was announced we sold him; he’s a great player to have in the Championship and is reliable. He’s a good guy and is great off the pitch too; he always has time for fans and has, one more than one occasion, handed over his match worn shirt to a disabled fan at Cardiff City. I would like to have kept him but I understand why he’s moved.

Glad he's gone to be honest, been a good servant but on high wages and we need much better if we are going to progress as a club.

I'll be honest I don't know but I expect he had a big wage boost when we got promoted so it wouldn't surprise me if he was on 25k+. We were spending 30 million a year when we got promoted on wages alone so to me that suggests that the majority of players were on quite a high wage even before the prem.

So you criticise him for high wages & then admit you don't actually know what wages he's on.

Taylor was excellent the two years he played in the championship with us... Exposed in the prem, but we aren't in the prem anymore.

 So I forgot to say he is most likely to be on high wages but it's a fair assumption. Based on the amount we were spending a year on wages the average wage of the squad was probably around 20k, now that's including a few youngsters I expect him to be on a high wage.

I thought Hudson was captain?

Personally I would of liked to see him stay. Puts in a great shift in the championship. John can be a bit too risky to play. Especially in such a mentally tough league like the championship.

If the Championship is a mentally tough league then I don't know what the Premiership is?. :laughing6: Declan John was in front of Taylor at a higher level and Fabio. Taylor's wages would not have been the issue, as they would have halved on relegation, he was got rid of because he weren't up to it, end of

The fact that he played very well in the 2 seasons at Cardiff at championship level & the fact that he's gone to what I perceive to be a promotion rival, suggests otherwise.

hes a basic value player. not that good really, but ok, we need better

Why are people writing him off? This is a guy who played like 90% of our matches 2 seasons ago and was one of our best players. I see why he's gone with the signings of Fabio and the emergence of John but people act like he's terrible.

Yeah, he was a useless c**t in the Prem who couldn't be bothered tracking back but he's still a brilliant Championship player who will add immensely to Wigan's squad.

Such fickle idiots on here.

The problem with Taylor was, that he would be good going forward, but did not have the pace to get back, hence you notice last season he did not do much in the attack sense, so good player but limited, always did his best, so good luck Andrew,
(except when you play us) :laughing6:

No surprise how this is going down with our fan base. Fickle we are should replace fire and passion on badge.

I'm surprised he is only 27 so letting him go with his experience of the Championship is even more surprising. Looks like his left back options will be Fabio and Declan John, both young players so we might be vulnerable there again as we were in the Premiership last season.

I keep saying it but no one takes any notice, Fabio is a right back, the only reason he played at left back for united was that SAF thought his brother was the better right back, he is much better at RB than LB

Well maybe so but why get rid of Taylor when we have Conolly, Theo. Brayford ,McNaughton and Fabio to fill the right back berth? Don't make sense to me.

Because there is a new left back coming from the premier league

Taylor was fine for us under malky unless he had a winger up against him. I think the fact we were so defensive anyway helped him.
I don't think he was bad, wouldn't say he was good. I'd bet on a good wage and I certainly have no problem on Ole looking to improve left back as it has been a weakness.
