Cardiff desperate to hold onto Marshall

A number of Premier League clubs including Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur are showing a heavy interest in Cardiff City goalkeeper David Marshall, with Cardiff holding out for their £15million asking price, according to FLW sources.

Marshall, who was arguably Cardiff’s standout player last season, has attracted interest throughout the season from top-four Premier League clubs and Cardiff are keen to make maximum use of this if they have to sell the in-form Scotsman.

The Cardiff hierarchy are looking to break the record transfer fee received for a British goalkeeper, with £15million being the fifth highest fee paid for British keeper and would place Marshall on a prestigious list of some of the Worlds finest goalkeepers, including Gianluigi Buffon and Manuel Neuer.


Marshall has made close to 200 appearances for Cardiff since joining in 2009

FA Cup winners Arsenal have been looking for a backup goalkeeper to Polish shot-stopper Wojciech Szczesny since the departure of the out-of-contract Lukasz Fabianski, who recently signed for Swansea City.

It is our understanding that Arsene Wenger rates Marshall highly and a move for the goalkeeper could be imminent, however the commanding fee being asked may prove to be something of a stumbling block.

Newly appointed Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino is also showing interested in the Scotsman, with Spurs keeper Hugo Lloris future looking increasingly uncertain, Marshall could be the perfect replacement for the Frenchman.

Bluebirds keeper Marshall was voted by the clubs fans as their player of the season,following a number of heroic displays in the clubs first ever appearance in the top-tier.

Many people were surprised to see David Marshall miss out on PFA Premier League team of the seasons having made over 150 saves this season for Cardiff City. Marshall was the first Premier League goalkeeper in history to reach a century of saves.

Marshall is just short of a double century of appearances for the Welsh side and although he is settled at Cardiff City, would prefer to be playing Premier League football again next season.

Arsenal are also interested in Norwich City goalkeeper John Ruddy, who like Marshall also wants to play regular Premier League football and with Norwich reportedly asking for £6million, Ruddy may be likened more by Wenger, who is known as a shrewd spender.

I actually think David Marshall will be our goalkeeper at the start of the Season, and the end.

if Marshall wants to stay keep him. Some Continuity and loyalty is important. OGS will bring in lots of hungry young player but you need players like Marshall around too.

Yeah, not sure if a club would pay £15m for a back up keeper and not sure those that would want him as a number one could afford that money but I hope he stays. I doubt it but getting that sort of money for him would be superb.

I've a gut feeling that Marshall will stay unless the club decide to cash in. He doesn't seem the type to be swayed by money and the prospect of sitting on the bench for a "Big" club.
