Scotland star Shaun Maloney insists £15 MILLION fee for David Marshall would be money well spent
Sunday Jun 01, 2014

By Gavin Berry

SCOTLAND keeper Marshall is interesting Arsenal and Tottenham after stand-out displays for Cardiff last season and old pal Maloney believes a rumoured £15 million transfer fee should come as no surprise.

SHAUN MALONEY insists no one should be surprised at the size of clubs being linked with David Marshall or the whopping transfer fees mentioned.

The Scotland keeper is reportedly at the centre of a tug of war between north London rivals Arsenal and Tottenham who are looking to capitalise on Cardiff City’s drop to the Championship.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is said to be lining up a swoop worth around £15MILLION following the 29-year-old’s standout performances for the Welsh side in the Premiership last season.

Maloney is a close friend of Marsh from their days as kids coming through at Celtic and knows there will be plenty of clubs interested in his international team-mate over the summer.

Arsenal are on the lookout for a new top-class shot-stopper as a replacement for Lukasz Fabianski who completed his free switch to Swansea last week. That has left Wenger needing someone to put pressure on Wojciech Szczesny.

James McCarthy is the most expensive Scottish-born player in history following his £14m move from Wigan Athletic to Everton last year – but Marshall could command a similar fee. And Maloney said: “The value is just a reflection of the way the game is in the Premiership.

“You see players going between English clubs for big sums so it wouldn’t be a surprise.

“I don’t think any club who are interested will get him at a reduced price because he’s dropped to the Championship.

“In fact, Cardiff might want to keep him because of the lure of the finances if they get back into the Premiership. That might dictate they want to hold on to him.

“But certainly in terms of the teams being linked with him, I don’t think there’s a great gulf between David and the keepers they have.

“David was touted for the Premiership team of the season so it’s been an excellent campaign for him.

“If he gets a move back to the Premiership he’ll have fully deserved it.

“I’d say it is inevitable that he’ll be linked with a move but you have to respect the fact his team are owned by someone who has put a lot of wealth into the club.

“Quite a few players in the Scotland squad will be getting linked with clubs this summer so David’s isn’t a story the boys really spoke about when we were away last week.

“But whatever he achieves he’ll have earned.

“He works very hard. It’s a very good feeling to see someone like that prosper this year. Anything he gets he’ll deserve.

“I can’t ever see him getting carried away by the speculation.

“I know he’s happy at Cardiff and can’t imagine him acting in a way that would upset his club.

“I feel particularly pleased for him. He had to work to get to the Premiership and to have a great season. I was with him when he was a young player and he had to move to find first-team football.

“From a young age when he burst on the scene, everyone knew how talented he was. It’s rare for a keeper to come in and play regularly when they are hardly out their teens.

“But he had to go and find first-team football and believe in his own ability. We’ve all seen that. He now believes in how good he is and he’s becoming a better goalkeeper because of it.

“For club and country for the last year he’s been excellent.

“He’s just become more confident within himself.

“It comes with age – you become more experienced and become a better keeper.”

Maloney believes between the sticks is one position where Scotland boss Gordon Strachan is particularly spoiled for choice.

Allan McGregor was given the nod for the 2-2 draw with Nigeria at Fulham’s Craven Cottage in midweek.

Fit-again McGregor was given his chance after Marshall’s impressive run and the battle for the keeper’s gloves is set to hot up between now and the Euro 2016 qualifying opener against Germany in September.

Maloney said: “Allan made one save in particular against Nigeria in a one-on-one situation where he saved with his feet.

“We’re lucky to be blessed with two standout keepers in the Premiership last season and we’ve Matt Gilks and Cammy Bell so we’re lucky in that department.

“When David and Allan play it gives the team confidence.

“You know if there’s a chance we’ve someone in goal who can produce the critical save.”

The points gained in games by keeping Marshall, I hope that the club try and keep him but if they have to sell then I suppose £15m or anywhere in that region will have been good business.

craig gordon and mignolet both went for 9m, i would put marshall around that bracket, anything approaching 15 million is amazing

I dont think anybody will be buying Marshall for that, nobody with any sense anyway.

Very good goalkeeper but if thats the asking price, he wont be going anywhere.

Have to agree there. It's a figure probably set as a bargaining tool - the chasing clubs are thinking around £7 - 8m, we set a price at £15m, if he goes it will probably be for a fee of around £9 - 10m. IMHO.

Barcelona payed 8M pending another 2m for Marc-Andre ter Stegen. One of the most talented goalkeepers in the world.
Cardiff getting 15M for Marshall dosent make sense at all :?

I'd be amazed if we got more than £6m.

We would get more than that if we did want to sell him, but Ole doesn't want to, and he doesn't want to go.

It will take a massive bid to big to turn down for him to go.......

I guess we'll all have to "watch this space" on Marshall, but one thing I can tell you is that he and his family are very happy in Cardiff (as a city and a club) and are not pushing for a move. however, as this is football, he accepts that should an offer from a "big" club come in and the club "accept the offer" he would be obliged to talk

Marshall wants to be a No.1 and enhance his Scotland ambitions, so would not be open to becoming anyones "back up" and (as I've said many times before) is HAPPY at Cardiff City FC, which gives us (the fans) hope and the club (via his existing contract) leverage

Watch this space. He may well end up going to a top club, but nothing is cut and dried quite yet

That puts us in a very good position then. Hang on to him, without the player being unsettled, until an offer too big to turn down comes in

Marshall doesn't want to leave which means he will only be sold for a great offer. He's a great servant and legend in my eyes for what he's done for the club and he could have asked to leave once Jones went but he stayed committed. If he stays then great and if he goes he goes with my blessing. A true class act and rarity in the modern game.

I would love Marshall to stay, but for £15m I'd take the cash. Great shot stopper but bull distribution not premiership standard.

Have to disagree there mate, I think his distribution was good, particularly his low, out of hand, kicks - they could be used as a potent counter attacking method......in the right team. He does occasionally do the odd awful kick but they are the ones you notice as they are quite rare, IMOH

Would be amazing to get but can't see it.

Between 7-10m would be a very good return.

Marshall is very close friends with one of my bosses and is not "looking" for a move, so it's all in our favour. If anyone else wants him they will have to go through the club, Marshall (or Marshall's Agent) and finally his missus!

Not an easy task! LOL

If you get 15 mill then you'll have done well but if an offer for 9mill comes in for him I think he's as good as gone. Still good buisness either way.

Best keeper in the Prem by far last season but with your relegation he's unlikely to ever command a figure as high as that while he's still a bluebird so cash in now and try and get Lee Camp on a free transfer for next season

When things sound too good to be true, they usually are. £15m far too much in my opinion. I expect him to go for half of that .... and good luck to him. Top man!
