Sell him and get the cash. Second half of the season he was nothing better than poor.

His fitness should be alot better but he's not lazy :o .

Re: ' Gary Medel '

IF he could have a good defensive midfield partner he would be very good for us

Re: ' Gary Medel '

whats his value £3-£4 m ?

Re: ' Gary Medel '

Fri May 30, 2014 10:22 am

Sell him. He evidently can't cut it in the Premier League because of the tempo and his lack of fitness. We'll just see the same thing happen again, go to Spain, play in lower tempo matches then come back here and look out of his depth again. Just get rid now.

I agree with this to be honest, the number of times he was left ball watching and lost his man was just not good enough for his position. Bit of a headless chicken, in saying that I did like him. but if we can get around 5m then I think we will be getting over his worth.

He's clueless, I tried rationally debating with him a couple of days ago and I 100% disagreed with everything he said.

Medel was great for us the first half of the season but was left completely exposed as soon as Ole took over with his gung ho, disorganised football. Even Claude Makelele in his prime would have been made to look an atrocious holding midfielder in Ole's team.

Very good players keep themselves fit and in condition. There's no excuse for a professional player being so out of condition as he was.

So was he ball watching, or was he a headless chicken? You've completely contradicted yourself there.

Medel had to do way more running around than a player in his position should have. A normal holding midfield sits in front of the back four in the centre, breaks up play and gives it simple to start attacks. Unfortunately for Medel, he was getting pulled from one side of the pitch to the other. The Norwich home game, Medel closed down three different players one after another while Whittingham was stood there motionless. Then as soon as Medel gets dragged out of position to do someone elses job, the opposition break through the middle to score and people point the finger at Medel saying he's too lazy and unfit to track back and was caught out of position ball watching. Incredible.

I agree Tonteg.
Until MM went he would have been my player of the season & up there on a par with Marshall. After that he tailed off a bit but was still good enough & was pretty average in the last period of the season.
Watching him was a joy most of the time: breaking up play & being the link & keeping it simple. Always looking for the ball off other players to keep the moves going & very, very rarely giving it away.
People seem to want huge cross field & defence splitting passes from him but that's not his game.

Total waste of money, another of Malky Milkays flops. Huddlestone cost over half less than Medel, and he's twice the player Medel is. When did any1 see Medel put a long accurate pass up field like huddlestone, never because all he does is pass sideways and backwards, overpriced and overweight.

What? I've never said it isn't a good standard. I just don't like the style of football played in Spain, how hard is that to understand?

Why is that a contradiction, its only a contradiction if I said he was doing it at the same time which would be a bit odd  . I would say thought that a general theme of his games was running around like a headless chicken for say 60mins and then struggling badly for the remainder of the game, his fitness didnt allow him to keep up his concentration, he would often then ball watch and lose his markers.

At the end of the day a good defensive midfidlers wouldnt be getting dragged out of position. I think if he did less work and held his position better he would have made life for him and us a lot easier. I certainly dont think he was lazy, he gave it all he had but his fitness was just not good enough.
I dont see us getting anywhere near our money back, if we can get half back then I would be pleased.

Medel seemed to have no problems holding his position for Sevilla or for Chile. The difference is with us, he got dragged out of position because he was covering those in front of him and alongside him letting him down. I go back to my point at the Norwich home game where Whittingham wasn't doing his job. There were other games where Medel kept getting dragged to the left to cover Whittingham and Taylor getting taken apart down that side for example. Declan John was constantly exposed home to Liverpool meaning Medel continuously got dragged out of position to cover. Another game Zaha wasn't tracking back leaving Catherine exposed with 2 players attacking him. If other players did their job, Medel would have been able to hold his position in the middle, but unfortunately because of circumstances, that was impossible.
