' FEDERICO MACHEDA SIGNS FOR CARDIFF CITY '
Tue 27 May 2014

22-year-old becomes City's third signing of the summer

City are delighted to confirm the signing of Italian striker Federico Macheda on a free transfer.

The 22-year-old frontman has put pen-to-paper on a three-year-deal after successfully completing his medical. Federico will join the club on July 1st 2014 following the expiration of his contract at Manchester United.

Looking forward to teaming up with Cardiff City boss Ole Gunnar Solskjær once again, having worked under him previously at Old Trafford, the Bluebirds’ third signing of the summer said: “It’s a massive opportunity for me and it is with thanks to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer that I am here. He played a big part of my decision and I’m really looking forward to starting this season.

“Last season I had a good spell on loan at Birmingham City, but this is a new chapter of my career now and I can’t wait to get started and show everyone who I am.

“Knowing Ole, he wants to get back into the Premier League as soon as possible and the recent signings show that.

“I’m here for the same reason. I feel that this is a great team and if we can have a good season and work hard then we can go straight back up.”

An Italian Under-21 International, Federico joined the Manchester United youth set-up from Lazio in 2007, going on to top the Under-18 scoring charts in his first season at Old Trafford, netting 12 goals in 21 appearances.

A man whose experience defies his tender years, Macheda burst onto the scene as a 17-year-old as he came off the bench against Aston Villa in 2009. 2-1 down at the time, Cristiano Ronaldo grabbed an equaliser for United before the Italian curled home a debut goal in stoppage time to win the match for Sir Alex Ferguson’s title challenging side.

Macheda continued to feature in the United squad that season, scoring his second goal for the club against Sunderland just 46 seconds after taking the field to replace Dimitar Berbatov before being rewarded with his first Barclays Premier League start for United against Middlesbrough that season.

It was a remarkable breakthrough campaign that saw him named the Jimmy Murphy Academy Player of the Year, an award also won by Mats Møller Dæhli, in recognition of his rise to the senior set-up at Old Trafford.

A Champions League debut against CSKA Moscow followed the next season before injury started to hinder his progress in establishing himself as a United first-team regular. He returned to score in a top-of-the-table clash against Chelsea later in that season, with his fourth goal for United coming the following year against Aston Villa.

The following few years saw him look to impress away from Old Trafford as he undertook a series of loan spells away from the club. 2011 saw him return to his native Italy for a spell with Sampdoria before 2012-13 saw him have stints at Queens Park Rangers and VfB Stuttgart.

It was 2013-14 campaign that saw ‘Kiko’ enjoy his most fruitful spell away from his parent club, first scoring three goals in two stints at Championship Doncaster Rovers before aiding Birmingham City’s push for survival with ten goals in 18 appearances for Lee Clark’s side.

Macheda arrives as the Bluebirds’ third signing of the summer following the arrivals of Javi Guerra and Guido Burgstaller last week.

I'm sorry to say guys but he was one of the worst players I've seen in a QPR shirt for many a year & believe me we've had some shit.

It's possible he just wasn't made for us at that time but look at the amout of clubs he's had in the last few years, to me it's alarming you should offer him a 3 year deal when I get the impression he doesn't settle anywhere long or no one wants to tie him down.

You are his SEVENTH club in 3 years averaging 5 goals a season which for a striker is shocking stats. What has OGS seen in this guy that everyone else hasn't?

Don't mean to sound despondent he may turn out a good catch for you. Just throwing my tuppence worth in.

think he's seen the 10 goals in 18 for a struggling Birmingham after given consistent game time... on a free it's not as big as a risk as people are making it out to be!

Free transfers usually come with high wages but I agree his return for Brum is probably what sealed the deal. We'll see I guess. Never had a strikers instinct from my experience of watching him. Positioning wasn't great & used to bottle a fair few headers for a big lad. Other than that he was class!! :D

OGS managed him at ManU reserves, he was the reserve leagues top scorer and they won the league after which Macheda was selected for the first team. They obviously had a good working relationship in the past. Here is too hoping they can recapture some of that.

Cheers pal. Mixed feelings on that. Elated with a fantastic day but another overhaul of squad required.

It'll be interesting to see how this signing turns out. As you say May have found the right manager for him. Hopefully he can nick you 12-15 goals which I'm sure you'd agree would be a decent return.

Cardiff City complete Federico Macheda signing

Cardiff City have announced that Federico Macheda has agreed to join the club on a free transfer.

The striker, who is coming to the end of his contract with Manchester United, has signed a three-year contract with the Bluebirds.

The 22-year-old told the club's website: "It's a massive opportunity for me and it is with thanks to [manager] Ole Gunnar Solskjaer that I am here. He played a big part of my decision and I'm really looking forward to starting this season.

"Last season I had a good spell on loan at Birmingham City, but this is a new chapter of my career now and I can't wait to get started and show everyone who I am.

"Knowing Ole, he wants to get back into the Premier League as soon as possible and the recent signings show that. I'm here for the same reason. I feel that this is a great team and if we can have a good season and work hard then we can go straight back up."

Macheda scored 13 goals in a total of 22 appearances during loan spells at Birmingham City and Doncaster Rovers in the 2013-14 season.

OGS knows Macheda personally similar to Fabio who really came to his true potential after several run outs. As a free transfer this is great transfer work he`s scored from Brum he could smash it City worth a word or in his here from Ole. By the way when he he played for QPR they were not yhe organized squad that just got promoted this year by any means. Good stuff from Ole with all transfers in at this stage, now bring in Collinson on a free so we could have someone to represent CCFC along with Declan John when the Welsh Squad gets announced, maybe Adam Matthews might favour a return home now Lennon has parted ways with Celtic? Maybe even Chad? no that be daft? Or maybe go for Tom Lawrence on loan and really rinse Oles Manure connection? KAAAYARDIFF BLOOOO ARMY :old:

Cardiff City have announced the signing of Manchester United flop Federico Macheda on a three-year deal.

The 22-year-old striker is set to join the Bluebirds, who finished bottom of the Premier League this season, when his contract at Old Trafford expires this summer.

Macheda said on the club's official website: "It's a massive opportunity for me and it is with thanks to [manager] Ole Gunnar Solskjaer that I am here.

"He played a big part of my decision and I'm really looking forward to starting this season."

The 22-year-old exploded onto the scene in 2009 when he came off the bench to score the winners for United against Aston Villa and Sunderland on his first two senior appearances for the Red Devils.

However, he failed to cement a first-team spot at the club and has spent much of the last few years on loan.

Macheda did impress in his last spell away with Birmingham, where ten goals in 18 appearances helped the Blues avoid relegation from the Championship by the skin of their teeth.

He added: "Last season I had a good spell on loan at Birmingham City, but this is a new chapter of my career now and I can't wait to get started and show everyone who I am.

"Knowing Ole, he wants to get back into the Premier League as soon as possible and the recent signings show that.
"I'm here for the same reason. I feel that this is a great team and if we can have a good season and work hard then we can go straight back up."

He made 22 appearances the season just gone 11 of which were as a substitute. He scored 13 goals with 5 assists which is pretty good going.
I also see in one of his interviews that he did not have a pre season with utd last season as moyes isolated him from the main squad.
A good pre season with ole and we might have a bargain on our hands.

That's my point mate. Why has no one gone for him on a perm move before yourselves? Seven clubs is a lot of managers to effectively not impress.

As I said initially not a dig just an observation & I do hope it works out for you as I think you need a good solid season to galvanize the club again.

Could be a ton of reasons why clubs haven't gone a perm move, because United might been reluctant to sell him.

I think it's brilliant he can finally settle, according to Brum fans he seems like a really decent bloke.
