ARSENAL'S FA Cup hero Aaron Ramsey was turned down by Newcastle United - who refused to pay a £500,000 fee for the Welshman.
It's a decision which still rankles with Newcastle's Wales scout at the time, Neil Bartholomew.
On his recommendation Newcastle flew the 15-year-old, who had been with Cardiff City since he was eight, up to the North East with his parents on a couple of occasions.
Although Ramsey was keen to join Newcastle and the midfielder was rated one of the best young prospects in Wales, the Geordies weren't prepared to pay the £500,000 fee needed to extricate him from Cardiff's academy.
But within two years of his dramatic impact in Cardiff's senior side, Arsenal came in with a £5million offer, which was accepted.
Now Ramsey has evolved into one of Arsenal's most important players and helped the Gunners land their first trophy in nine years with the extra-time winner in last weekend's FA Cup Final against Hull City.
A Newcastle source confirmed: "The annoying thing is that the young lad was keen to sign and it would only have cost £500,000. Look at what he must be worth now.
"Our Welsh scout Neil Bartholomew kept on raving about him. You can imagine how hurt he has been at the move not happening with Newcastle."

It's quite gutting to think that we only sold him for £5m though.

It's still a bit of a risk buying a 15 year old for 500k tbf, and Newcastle probably wouldn't have given him the time like Arsenal did after he broke his leg.

What worries me most about this is the fact our best young talents can be poached by Premiership clubs for 500k! Is 500k the release clause for every youngster at our club then?

no new rules prevent it now there is some sort of panel who say how much player is worth in an academy or something like this, dont forget you are talking 10yrs or so regarding ncastle and ramsey so times have changed
