Why every Cardiff fan should thank Craig Bellamy

Craig Bellamy’s retirement was always on the cards. He featured very little during Cardiff’s jaunt into the Premier League and it looked as if years of hard running and knee operations had caught up to him.

Indeed, it really wasn’t a surprise when the boy from Splott announced his retirement from football.

Bellamy was a player who divided opinion but if he played for you, you loved him.

I’ll never forget the excitement that he brought to the City when he first signed on loan. It seemed like the impossible was happening. There had been much rumour and talk that it might happen and it still didn’t seem real when it did happen.

Indeed, he brought us so much hope that it was our year; but it all fell apart in the play-offs. He went off injured in the first leg against Reading and though we managed a 0-0 draw, when he wasn’t in the squad for the second leg, we knew it was over.

There was always a sense of unfinished business with him and Cardiff City and he made his return and helped the club get promoted to the Premier League. Sure, he didn’t set the world on fire last season but who did? He was lost in a sea of mediocrity.

His hometown team, promoted, with him as captain. It’s what dreams are made of!

People have been critical of Bellamy this season but I simply can’t be. He’s a Cardiff boy playing for his team. He’s pushed his knees as far as they can take him and its right he bows out now.

My memory of Bellamy will always be one of him snarling at a referee or at an opposing player. He played every game as if it was a cup final, never relenting and never giving up.

One of my favourite Cardiff moments involving Bellamy didn’t even come when he was playing for us. When Ben Turner scored a last-minute equaliser against Liverpool at Wembley, in the background of one of the photos is Bellamy, on the pitch in a Liverpool shirt, smiling. Fantastic.

So here’s to you, Craig. I can’t help but love you. You are the last of a dying breed, a footballer with unnerving honesty and passion.

My memory of Carling cup game was a bunch of fowl mouth chavs calling bellamy a cU... For not doing Ayatollah. kids everywhere!!!!! Bellamy thanks for your efforts and keep telling the boo boys how it is!!!!!

Agree with everything in original post. The guy is a welsh legend and following his entire career finishing here been amazing.
Those that say I'm not thanking him are prob the same tossers that chant about VT...clueless to bigger picture.

No thanks. More hassle than he was a pleasure to have, barely turned up unless it was on his terms, called the people of the City he lives in wankers numerous times and underminded two young managers. f**k off no neck

If I was sat where you were I would think that bells had said that to the ones who booed Whitts, and I would of been more pissed off with them for booing a Cardiff City player, but that's the way I think everybody to their own

Then it wasn't aimed at you. He was quite clear after that his frustration was at the people who booed Whitts. He can't single out individuals in the stand so gave a collective wanker at those who booed.

On a personal note, I'd "thank" him, as he did what several other high profile Cardiff players didn't do...and that was to play his part in promotion to The Premier League

He screamed f*cking wankers at us without discrimination or reason. There were kids around us......do you think thats right?

Just another player, a lot of players have given us a hell of a lot more and played for us at their peak not when they were passed it.........
