Liverpool are set to step up their interest in Cardiff City defender Steven Caulker who has an escape route out of the club.
Caulker only joined the south Wales club last summer from Tottenham Hotspur, but after Cardiff were relegated from the Premier League he is ready to swiftly move on.
[football] direct news understands that Liverpool are set to take advantage of a release clause in Caulker’s contract that will allow him to leave the club now they are relegated.
The 22-year-old centre back is wanted to come in and help shore up the leaky Liverpool defence by Reds boss Brendan Rodgers.
Liverpool will face competition from Tottenham who are reported to be keen on bringing back a player they sold for £8 million last year.
The defender was once considered one of the most promising in England and was part of the Team GB Olympic squad back in /2012.
However, a lack of playing time at Tottenham saw his career stall before he sealed a move to Cardiff.
