Cardiff City offer Don Cowie a new deal but the midfield ace has other offers on the table to consider

Saturday May 17, 2014

Bluebirds manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed he is keen to hold on to the 31-year-old who is out of contract

The Don, it seems, has a decision to make.

Industrious midfielder Don Cowie is out of contract at Cardiff City this summer, but there is a new deal on the table to keep him in the Welsh capital.

Bluebirds manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed he is keen to hold on to the 31-year-old as he looks to prepare a squad for the Championship next season.

Scottish international Cowie, though, admits he is currently unsure what the future might hold for him.

The midfielder surprised some by making a big contribution to Cardiff’s disastrous Premier League campaign. The man, who switched to Cardiff from Watford just after former Bluebirds manager Malky Mackay made the same move in July 2011, made ten Premier League starts and came off the bench eight times.

He could not help stop the Bluebirds finishing bottom of the table and plunging out of the top-flight after just one season.

But with Cowie playing a big part in the Bluebirds original promotion from the Championship the midfielder could well have a role to play in the forthcoming campaign as the Bluebirds look to bounce straight back up. But with Blackburn, who tried to get Cowie on loan last season, said to still be interested in his services, the Scot is currently considering his options.

“I’m out of contract this summer and really it will be a case of just seeing what happens,” said Cowie.

“There’s been a wee bit of discussion already, but nothing more than that. It’s a time of uncertainty right now.

“I’ve had three good years at Cardiff, but the new manager has come in so you never quite know what’s going to happen. The new man will want to put his own squad together so we will have to see.

“When I came to Cardiff the hope was to play in the best league in the world and I managed to achieve that. But when you’ve achieved something you want more of it and it’s disappointing to know we are not going to have it next season.”

The Bluebirds relegation was confirmed with one game of the season left when they were defeated at St James’ Park by Newcastle.

On the final day, Solskjaer and his men lost 2-1 at home to Chelsea.

Cowie himself reflected on a season which had been much anticipated, but proved to be a major disappointment.

But if he is at the club next season he believes the Bluebirds do have what it takes to bounce straight back up.

“We let ourselves down over the course of the whole season. The table does not lie. We were disappointed by the manner in which we were relegated,” added Cowie.

“The main problem for us was that we dropped points against the sides we should have been beating or at least drawing against. We had a lot of big games against teams who were down the bottom end of the league, we lost them and that proved a big factor. That was the main reason we ended up relegated.

“But the good thing about football is you get another chance. You get the opportunity to bounce straight back.

“In the Championship it will be a case of just rolling up our sleeves and getting on with it.

“We showed before that we are capable of getting out of it. We know it’s very difficult, but we need to get back together, put a squad together capable of doing it, and work hard again to get back up. Where everybody wants to be is in the Premier League.”

If Cowie does leave Cardiff, he will be amongst a group of players expected to hit the exit as Solskjaer starts reshaping his squad.

One of the first players set to leave looks to be club record signing Gary Medel.

The combative midfielder, who will link up with Chile at the World Cup next month, has already been described by Solskjaer as ‘too good for the Championship.’

Skipper Steven Caulker too, who himself missed out on the England squad to go to Brazil, is also being linked with a move away whilst goalkeeper David Marshall could be a target for other clubs.

One player the Bluebirds look keen to hold on to is striker Fraizer Campbell, who reportedly also has a release clause in his contract.

The 26-year-old scored six Premier League goals for the Bluebirds and seven in 12 games the season before as they gained promotion.

Cardiff are in talks looking to persuade Campbell to stay.

“Fraizer’s done fantastically for us, not just this season but the previous season,” said chairman Mehmet Dalman.

“He’s very much loved at the club and we want him to stay.”

The move to hold onto Campbell comes despite the Bluebirds having a £3m offer for striker Lewis Grabban accepted by Bournemouth.

Not for me, Annis...even in the Championship :(

I understand there may be a vacancy for a 'holder' in Norwich soon, though

Chris, Cowie was def not a Premiership player and I'm 50/50 about him for next season, my opinion a good squad player for the Championship.

Good workhorse and squad player but if we want to push on as a club we need better

Let him go, there won't be much interest. An average Championship player imo.

For me it's a no brianer to have him as a squad player.

Let him go I say, we need a massive shake-up if we are to succeed

Keep him. Good squad player and adds balance to the side, we can't play attacking without some workhorses in the middle to add stability. Although I wouldn't be surprised if he went with Malky if he does indeed get the Norwich job

When you consider his position within the squad you would think he would jump at a new contract with a Championship squad.

I assume he will hold out and see where Malky ends up. There may be a contract in the offing with a manager he is comfortable with.

Probably played more last season than the previous in the Championship, which I don't get?
Ole took Daehli off against Chelsea for the steady, Conservative Cowie & we conceded 2 in 7 mins, one which he was blatantly at fault. Been a good servant but time to move on maybe?

A great pro and runs all day but IMO he is an advanced central midfield player a we have far better than him.

Amazing how many of our championship winning side are now no good for anything.

Attitudes like that are why this club is the way it is. Always thinking it's bigger than it is.

Cowie is a patient guy, and does a job when he comes in, but if I were him I'd move on to a club that is promising first team football. In my opinion, he doesn't got OGS' style, and will only ever get used as a sub to see out games when we are only a goal or two ahead.

We have made a big error in getting rid of Conway and Gestede. One is a very good championship player the other has improved a great deal this year. Even with that with the parachute payments we need to hold on to our very good players, sell our very good value players I.e caulker, Medel.

We also need to get rid of people on big wages that just don't cut it like kenwyne the. Also squad players like Cowie need to go.

The. With the parachute payments invest in players that improve the current team and also bring back mason, Maynard, kiss etc.

The worrying thing is I've been told "and I in no way claim to be in the know"

Hudson wants to leave

Connolly wants to leave

Taylor is for sale

Now they are 3 championship players that got us promoted and we could do with holding onto them
