Wilfried Zaha ruled out of England U21 qualifier against Wales with muscle injury

Manchester United defender out of crunch qualifier against the Welsh

Zaha has had a tough season in the Premier League

Gareth Southgate said the youngster had been carrying a knock

By DOMINIC KING

Saturday 17th May 2014.

Wilfried Zaha has suffered more disappointment in his season of frustration after he withdrew from England's Under-21 squad for Monday's Euro 2015 qualifier with Wales.

The Manchester United forward has an unspecified muscle problem in his leg and after consultations with Zaha and his club medical staff, it was decided to scratch him from the list.

Zaha was not eligible for the squad Gareth Southgate will take to the Toulon Tournament next week as he is too old but the Under-21 head coach is disappointed the campaign has ended this way for a player who has struggled to get regular starts either at United or Cardiff, where he went on loan.

On his time with us, I thought Ole being the man he is and United trying to tell him to give the loan spell a chance and perform that he would be someone we would appreciate during his time here. Sadly he didn't deliver ENOUGH.

Against Norwich, he replaced Whitts and actually made us all in the ground who was there get off towards their edges of their seats when he got on the ball, showed a lot of desire and was confronting players like Snodgrass who we know love to try and wind up any opposition player. He couldn't have done any better when you think he hardly had any match time and he was going past players for Norwich like they weren't there then delivered a great assist to Bellars, as easy it was he was alert and read the interception and played him, the kick off he was alert and got another interception and was the reason we was pushing high with numbers to get the 2nd.

After that game he never really filled me with great positiveness, always doing something right then doing something wrong.

V Southampton he was back to the game v Norwich, always looking to go forward, drive us forward and trying to make us punish Southampton instead of us being on the backfoot for the last 25..

Attitude wise he could be one of the best wingers in the Prem if you look at potential and his age.

I know it's just championship and play offs but I always fancied Brighton to go up but the first leg he caused them problems but the clinical edge for Palace weren't there, second leg he delivered with both goals, credit to Bolaise for the first cross for the header but he went on to the final, was always trying to get on the ball and get at Palace, the energy he showed throughout the game when he won the penalty, everyone looked dead on their feet and who could blame them, but he won the penalty.

He can deliver, attitude it all comes down too.

Sad IMO as I wish players would show the desire Barnett did for us.

As passionate as Barnett was when he played for us, it's quite easy to "show the desire" when the team is doing well... It's more challenging when your team isn't doing well and your performances are then scrutinised.

Done the ayatollah which is a simple request, spoke highly of the club the first day he walked in (A mate of his Twitter tweeted regulary).

He joined when we lost out main man and rock at the back, OUR CAPTAIN Mark Hudson for basically the rest of the season and we didn't have a tidy CB at the club so we signed him as an emergency to step in and fill them boots which isn't simple, we were on a slight dip of form at this point, not playing hardly any matches like Zaha he stepped in v Sheff Wed.. I heard he made an error in that game thankfully didn't lead to a goal but managed to have a top game by some who travelled up, played in games v Peterboro where he didn't do anything wrong, two penalties cost us the points, done well in the other games.. Zaha is United player and didn't play any games, granted a loan move I expected to him to show his quality, not like Ole didn't give him the chance to do with the positive football we tried to play.

Two good posts mate, you've got a good memory

Maybe he'll come good in a couple of years, but as one of the other posters said, the Norwich game was probably his best. Otherwise, he's a bit like Daehli with stepovers, and not quite as impressive...

The only reason Moyes got shot of him is because he was banging his daughter. :laughing6:

hes got to take a good look at himself if you ask me. When he joined us in January, a big consistent performance for 4 months might have got him a look at the England side, even more so with Walcott and Townsend ruled out through injury. Instead his career just looks to be going backwards rapidly.

Perhaps he just isnt good enough? certainly needs to improve his attitude if hes going to make it at Prem level though.

Wasn't consistent enough from what I saw. As already said exciting against Norwich but never seemed to reproduce the enthusiasm he showed that day.

Daehli has way better development right now but otherwise a bit unfair on Zaha. They have a very different skill set. Daehli is natural playmaker, he is obviously technically gifted but he also has the ability to read the game quicker than most players he sees a pass before the average player in a way that a natural playmaker does.
Zaha doesn't have this quality, the guy is more like a young ronaldo ( arguably not as impressive). Fast, unpredictable and also a bit of an egotistical showboat. With his power and pace make him run at defenders in space and tone down the excessive dribbling ( he is really not as good at dribbling as he may have looked in the championship) The guy obviously has a lot of potential but there is a question mark over his attitude and/or mental strength or drive.
I think someone like Van Gaal might sort him out he has a good record with young players.

Not because he only plays when he feels like it then?
