Cardiff City director defends red seats
Thursday 15 May 2014

viewtopic.php?f=2&t=141617

Cardiff City director Steve Borley has defended the club’s decision to install “mostly red” seats as part of a stadium expansion.

Owner Vincent Tan recently suggested he could reconsider his controversial decision to rebrand the club from its traditional blue to red, should they win promotion back to the Premier League following their relegation at the end of this season.

However, the revelation that the majority of seats in a new second tier on the Cardiff City Stadium's Ninian Stand would be red sparked an angry reaction from supporters.

Despite falling out of English football's top flight, Cardiff are pressing ahead with plans to expand their stadium from 27,000 to 33,000 seats and Borley brushed off critics of the stadium's "vibrant" new look.

"Next you will be complaining about red fire extinguishers and fire alarms," he tweeted in response to one fan.

Borley also pointed out that there were already red seats in the directors' box and press benches, and posted pictures of Barcelona's Camp Nou stadium as an apparent comparison.

Work is set to be complete by July 18th 2014.

' Cardiff City director Steve Borley clashes with fans on Twitter after 'red seats' revelation '

Steve Borley, a lifelong supporter of the Bluebirds, took to a social media site to answer concerns from fans, but matters soon degenerated into a slanging match

A Cardiff City director has become embroiled in a war of words with supporters after he announced the new seats at the club’s stadium would be ‘mainly red.’

Steve Borley, a lifelong supporter of the Bluebirds, took to a social media site to answer concerns from fans, but matters soon degenerated into a slanging match.

At one point a vexed Borley tweeted: " Next you will be complaining about red fire extinguishers and fire alarms."

Many supporters have united in opposition against owner Vincent Tan’s decision to rebrand the Cardiff home shirt from blue to red and there have been regular demonstrations calling for a return to the traditional home strip. It is a campaign being backed by the South Wales Echo newspaper.

Tan recently stated he might be open to a compromise when it comes to the shirt colour, but it remains unclear what form that might take with the Malaysian businessman only saying he would look into it when the club returns to the Premier League.

Despite Cardiff dropping out of the top-flight last week work is well underway to add another tier of seats to the stadium’s Ninian Stand.

The development will take the capacity of the venue from 27,000 to 33,000 in time for the hosting of the European Super Cup in August.

That showpiece tie will now be an all-Spanish affair as Sevilla’s Europa League triumph mean they will now play either Real Madrid or Atletico Madrid, who contest the Champions League final in Lisbon on May 24.

Closer to home passions are running high over what is seen as a creeping infiltration of the seat colours at the Cardiff City Stadium where currently the vast majority are the traditional blue.

But Borley admitted the majority of the 6,000 new seats will be red after Tan ‘specified’ he wanted that colour.

Borley was keen to point out they would not be in a block of red and said a design showing how the new seating would look would soon be released by the club.

He added there were already 200 red seats fitted into the stadium, including those in the directors’ box and the press benches.

Borley even tweeted a link to a picture of Barcelona’s Nou Camp with its striking red and blue seating design by some way of explanation and made reference to Sam Hammam’s infamous remark that Cardiff would one day rival the Catalan giants.

This^^ people are delusional if they think he's going to publicly slate the rebrand when he's in the position he is in. Easy for us lot to make our feelings clear. He probably should step away from things like twitter a little bit though, and save himself a lot of grief from angry fans...unless he's being ordered to make a show on things like twitter from above

I sympathise with Steve's predicament BUT to make a flippant comment comparing the issue to the colours of safety equipment (governed by European legislation and rightly so) was crass stupidity.

I would argue that if the safety equipment has to be red, then the seats should contrast with them to make the fire extinguishers stand out!! It's as stupid as that.

If he is going to interact with fans, he needs to do soon as professional a manner as possible.

If your sat on the seats then they wont be seen so I cannot see the big deal. They could be sky blue pink and it wont matter.

Why are people concerned about how the stadium looks when it is empty?

He definitely seems to be in the "arse-licking" category that Tan has surrounded himself with.

My attitude is f**k anyone that backs or defends these decisions, regarding anything red.

Cardiff City are blue. End of. :bluescarf: :bluescarf: :bluescarf:

After Tan goes I hope this guy gets hounded out.

Never forget your roots Borley and thats exactly what you have turned your back on. Then again I should really understand that as this is the best chance you will see your money. There was no chance of that happening with the other guy was there?

What else do you expect him to say? The boss he has will do anything in a click in a finger compared to whoever your boss is.

In no way at all has he defended anything, he's being honest and you lot know it.

Did you honestly expect the seats to be blue? No.

If you was in his situation you wouldn't have the balls to answer back, simple.

Then he should just keep his gob shut then. He knew what would go down by tweeting what he did. He didn't have to do that but he chose to. Lost all respect for him now.

Come on Dando. Borley is rubbing it in. He wanted his money back and Tan was his best option. No one is blaming him for thinking that. However he should have kept quiet but no he could not do that. A few drinks and he starts thinking he is being smart by rubbing it in. The guy has lost total respect from quite a few of us.
