Only others out of contract are Lappin and Bellamy.
We've got a squad of 40 at the moment. 3 out of contract leaves 37, add Guerra, that's 38.
Say Marshall goes (and he'll have to be replaced either by a new no. 1 or by a 3rd keeper cover), Caulker goes, Campbell and Medel.
With the new keeper that makes 35.
Wharton, Healey, Amondarain, Nugent, Oshilaja, are all likely to go out on loan or just be development players. So left with 30.
I'd say a squad of 3 keepers, 4 centre halfs, 2 left backs, 2 right backs, 9-10 midfielders and 4-5 strikers is enough, with a couple of youngsters as back up.
So we'd still need to shift a fair few out if we are to bring others in.
We've got 3 left backs - so for me that's Taylor on his way. Keep John and Fabio
We've got 3 right backs - keep Brayford and then it's a toss up between Kev and KTC - I hate to say it, but KTC is younger and more likely to mkae an impact long term, so Superkev may need to move. Hopefully he'll prove me wrong
Out of the centre halfs, keepers are Hudson, Turner, Cala and I'd also stick with Connolly. Good mix with that 4 IMHO.
Midfield -We've GOT to bring in a leader here, I'll get slaughtered, but someone like Kevin Nolan would be suprb in my eyes. That would leave 8 spots...Whittingham, Noone, Eikrem, Mutch, Ralls, Daehli and Harris would take 7, with Gunnarrson probably the 8th. f the budget allows another decent winger would come in. That would leave Kiss,Kimbo, Cowie, as surplus. Seems a bit harsh on Cowie who's a consumate professional, decent Championshipmlayer who made 22 appearances in the prem this year. At least he won't be short of offers.
Hopefully Kimbo will have a decent World Cup.I'm still not sure about him, great skills, but so easy to knock off the ball and useless defensively.
Strikers.. -surprisingly we've got a lot here. If Campbell goes, I'd look at Guerra, Mason, Maynard to stay, we might not have much choice with Jones.. I've only seen 20 minutes of Berget and Velikonja will surely go, it would be good to add 1 more quality one to this, a biggish guy, Garbban has been linked and would be great, again I'll be crucified, but Danny graham wouldn't dissappoint me here. McCormack would be superb, but we'd maybe lack a physical edge and we'd have to play really good football to make it work with McCormack/Mason and Guerra/Maynard. Although those are pretty decent options. better than we had this year -or last !
So looking at all this the challenge for Ole is trimming the squad - a lot - to make room for a few quality additions, without losing the best talent. Of course a lot depends on who suits the way he wants to play and what budget he has, also what offers come in from outside for our players.
Should be an interesting summer.
