Relegation Clauses in contracts

Wed May 07, 2014 8:27 am

So apparently there are clauses in both Caulker and Medels contracts that mean they can now leave the club.

Am I looking at this the wrong way? if im in charge of a newly promoted club there is no way im putting these clauses in the contracts of my players. Why the f**k should Caulker and Medel give two shits about trying their hardest while here knowing full well that relegation probably wont effect their livelihood and wages.

You let these sorts of things get in the contracts then you are going to end up with a team full of pussies who care only about not being injured so they can move onto the next team, pick up their wages they don't deserve and another fat cheque of a signing on bonus, as well as funding their Agents summer holiday!

Makes my blood boil

I find relegation clauses desperate.

Then you simply wouldnt sign them. They dont want to be stuck in the championship for a portion of their career.

Dorus DeVries wouldnt insert a relegation wage drop one into his contract so left for Wolves as "they had more chance of staying up" :laughing6:

id rather not sign these types of players if im honest. i think it says a lot about someones character that they want something like this.

Also its a bit cheeky to expect to instantly move to another prem club when a player wasnt good enough to keep his current club in the same division

It goes both ways though. We would insert a clause reducing wages in event of relegation.

Loyalty is a two way street. You can't accuse Caulker or Medel of not trying.

the wage issue I see a bit differently myself, if the players at the club aren't good enough to keep them in the top tier, then the money they earn should represent not only their true value, but the income of the club (which of course is significantly less in the championship)

For me, the insertion of relegation clauses is put there purely to insure the player doesn't have to spend a season playing in a division that he is partly responsible for the club being in.

Also, rather than accusing players like Medel and Caulker of "not trying", I find it personally galling that we can pay so much for two players who know that whatever happens to our club, they can just move on. Caulkers performances haven't been great in the last 10 games this season, and Medel hasn't made any effort to increase his fitness level.

What would happen if these players knew they would be staying with us in the tougher championship? on significantly reduced wages I might well add? do you think they would have gone into games with a different mind-set?

I don't mean to target Caulker and Medel with this, I was talking generally about the contracts, and its something we see a lot of.... I remember Joe Cole handing in a transfer request the day after west brom were relegated for example.
