RELEGATION CLAUSES IN CCFC PLAYERS CONTRACTS

Mon May 05, 2014 4:59 pm

Cardiff City's two most expensive stars could be heading out of the door once the Premier League season finishes next week.

Cardiff City's Premier League relegation means they will almost certainly wave goodbye to stars Steven Caulker and Gary Medel this summer as the pair have release clauses in their contracts.

The pair of internationals, who the Bluebirds splashed out nearly £20m on last summer, reportedly have clauses in their contracts that would allow them to leave once the season has finished - if a club matches up to Cardiff's valuation of them.

Relegation was confirmed after the 3-0 defeat at Newcastle United last Saturday but the Bluebirds finish off their first ever Premier League campaign against Chelsea on Sunday.

Before any move is completed though, both stars could be heading to Brazil for the World Cup. That could increase or decrease their valuations accordingly.

What other players would you expect to have relegation clauses in their contract ?

David Marshall perhaps ?

Didn't Marshall sign his last contract prior to promotion?

Such bad business to pay that much for 2 players that will bail when a team go down. Especially Medel, who will be sold at a cut prize.

Can't see any premier league team wanting to buy Gary medal, he may go back to spain, but for a drastically reduced price from what we payed for him. He might just decide to stay, probably be on more with us than he would be if he went back to Spain

I believe they will both leave if for no other reason than it will stop any future add on payments agreed in thier contracts. I'm also sure that the fact we are relegated will mean that the club has already saved a few £m's in add ons.Bonus payments for helping the club secure another season in the PL. Also the squad bonus scheme that VT kicked up such a fuss about won't be payable that must be really pleasing for him. £40m gone in revenue but at least he doesn't have to pay the squad bonus.

That then begs the question with Cornelius, Odemwingie and probably Caulker and Medal on the way how much of the alledged £15m addons will become payable.

Hmmmm.

Seems an odd clause that they can go ifthe fee meets the clubs valuation....

Is there a fee already in the contract or could the club just say the fee doesn't match their valuation.

This is pretty much what you would expect, the club has to control the valuation, however they aren't going to pitch it too high, as they would probably want both players off the wage bill, to get a couple in who are more than capable of playing at Championship level but on a fraction of the wages of these two.

No doubt theres a few more with this clause in their contract. Can also see their pay going down as its a lower league as part of their contract.
But Tan is a business man, i believe he will have set these clauses so he doesnt lose money

Since Tan has come in we have supposedly said no to some reasonable offers for our players simply because we didn't have to sell for financial reasons. I would have thought these clauses just mean the players will be allowed to leave if their valuations are met instead of being forced to stay in the championship simply because Tan doesn't want to sell first team players.

Very good point, & relevant, I believe, to the crux of the matter of why Moody, & ultimately Malky, was sacked.

It was bad enough that most of last summers new player contracts were sanctioned in the first place, & if that wasn't the case, then to further add a squad bonus on top of that was.

Malky & Moody both have a lot to answer for, but so do the board of directors who sanctioned those contracts in the first place!

Let's just hope Medal has the greatest run of form the World Cup has even seen and over inflates his valuation.

It doesn't matter whether he has a good WC or not. He has a value on his contract which if met, has to be accepted. It could be 5m and he could be player of the tournament and he'd still go for 5m.
