' Peter Whittingham is confident Cardiff are capable of bouncing straight back into the Premier League '

Sunday 4th May 2014.

Peter Whittingham and Cardiff were condemned to the drop by a 3-0 defeat at Newcastle

Cardiff midfielder Peter Whittingham says the club have to use the pain of relegation as motivation to get back into the Premier League.

The Welsh side were promoted last season but have struggled in the top flight and are currently bottom of the table with one match left.

And relegation was confirmed on Saturday, when Cardiff were defeated 3-0 at Newcastle while Sunderland secured a 1-0 victory at Manchester United.

Cardiff had their chances at St James' Park, particularly in the second-half, and Whittingham felt the manner of the defeat was symptomatic of their season.

"We're just devastated," he said. "To be honest, it wasn't just today. We haven't been good enough in most of the games this season.

"It's a hard one to take but it gives everyone the drive and incentive to go again and get back here.

"We probably haven't had the bits of luck you need to stay in this League.

"We haven't been good at times but I think today typifies it. We had some great chances, and on another day they go in, but instead it ends up looking like we were battered.

"It's tough to take. If we had equalised and got it back to 1-1, it changes the whole game, but things just haven't dropped for us this year. It's horrible.

"The fans have been brilliant all season and we are gutted we couldn't do it for them. This is really horrible for us and for them."

Asked if he thought Cardiff could bounce straight back, Whittingham said: "Yes. Most of the boys here got the club up, so we've got the core of it.

"We'll see what the manager does in the summer and everybody will go from there."

And, when asked if he would be a better player for the Premier League experience, he added: "Yes, I think everyone will be.

"It's a very tough league and it shows up if you're not good enough. Everyone needs to go back to the drawing board, start again, and hopefully get back here."

I like PW, but i don't think he will play any different next season, to the way he has played previously in the Championship.

i think the DJ Whitts comes back with Ole.

Lets be honest, I doubt Ole had ever heard let alone seen Whitts play, especially in his real position

Annis lots of things need to change to be competitive in any league you need unity and we aint got it.
The only way forward for me now is tan has to re unite the club with its fans and we then all pull together as a club .palace had it and Sunderland goid unity which brings every thing together and thats what football is all about you no that mate.

Unless we have unity at the club I dont see any change and to be honest I am exhausted trying to make the man listen.

If tan aint now willing to change we as fans have to get him out of are club after all nobody should be bigger than the club.
One more season in trying and if we fail im out after going for 35 years mate.

I am looking forward to the championship its a really good competitive league you watch one man spoil it again.

We need Whitts for next season for his set piece play & he generally provides a good return of goals at that level.

I love Peter Whittingham one of my Favourite Cardiff players of all time. I would want us to retain him whatever the position but mainly because as a club we need players who know what we are about, who have done time down here etc same goes for Noughts. At the moment we look a lot like Dave jones last side, disjointed players who don 't care ....general apathy...him and Daehlu to tear the championship apart, just need that top striker.

Whitts barely played under Ole until he had that rest after the Norwich game but I am excited to see the Whitts of old next season, all we need is a striker to get on to his killer balls from the midfield

If this one thing that gives me optimism is any game is hearing Ali call out 'Number 7, Peter Whittingham'.

Hopefully Bellamy leaves so we can see Whitt's banging in them.

Can anyone recall his last free kick he scored? Blackpool home in the 3-0 win?
