There were no tears.
There were no shots of supporters sobbing into their scarves.
There were no images of inconsolable players slumped on the St James’ Park turf.
There was just the final whistle and the confirmation of what both those in the stands and on the pitch already knew, what everyone already knew: Cardiff City were relegated.
They were officially down moments after the final whistle here, Sunderland’s win at Old Trafford making mathematically sure things did not linger on and the club would be condemned to the Championship.
But there were no players rushing around to discover their fate by virtue of results elsewhere because they knew, beaten 3-0, it was done.
There were no tears, no anger, no frustration. There was just nothing.
A nothing performance, one of fleeting moments of fight against what may have been inevitable but what could have least been taken to the final weekend.
