1) Had us playing great football at times
2) Kept us competing at the top on a very limited budget
3) Our best player last season, Hudson, is a Jones signing
4) Our best player over the last few years, Whittingham, is a Jones signing
5) Our best player this year, Marshall, is a Jones signing
6) He took us to an FA Cup final with a pretty rubbish side in the grand scheme of things
Dave Jones was manager from 05-11. Our transfer balance sheet during that time.
05/06 = + £2.8m
06/07 = + £2.25m
07/08 = + £10m
08/09 = + £7.6m
09/10 = - £1.1m
10/11 = £300k
Total transfer balance = + £21.85m
Without Jones' contribution we'd have been either further in debt and in more financial mire. He did a great job for us.
Moving on: Malky Mackay: I'm not factoring in the Premier League season as of course we'd spend more once promoted.
11/12 = - £800k
12/13 = - £10.15m
Total transfer balance = - £10.95m
So in 2 years, Malky spent roughly half of the transfer income Jones brought in over 6 years. Jones spent over 6 years roughly £10.7m. Malky spent more in our promotion winning season alone than Jones did during his entire time as Cardiff City manager yet still had us competing in the play-offs and he took us to a cup final in a better and more difficult cup to win than Malky did.
Call him stubborn. Call him boring. Call him what you like but if he's generating £20m+ over 6 seasons for a club in the Championship by his movements in the transfer market then he's a great person to have at the club, even more so if he's keeping you competing near the top. We could have bided our time and continued under Jones and hopefully had got promoted. Instead we threw money at the problem, money we didn't have and now we're in even more debt so that was a very shrewd financial move indeed.
Also, in the 6 out of 7 years before Jones became our manager we made losses in terms of transfer expenditure as well. It was only when Jones come on board that we started to see positive figures on the transfer balance sheet. That's very telling indeed. We had an Arsene Wenger at Championship level. Boring, stubborn but effective in the transfer market and had us competing near the top of the Championship. We also went on great runs of form at times and played good football too. We could play teams off the park and we could also lapse and fall apart very much like Arsenal. We didn't win the league under Jones but we were from a financial viewpoint in terms of transfers doing extremely well.
I know we had debts elsewhere but they could have been resolved in other ways and were of no fault of the managers of the club. The problem is, our financial situation due to other issues overshadowed the great work he was doing in the transfer market and it went unnoticed by many.
If Tan wants a stable club and we want a stable club the best way to go about it is to bring in a manager who can make you money in the transfer market but also have you competing. Sooner or later you will fluke promotion even if its because others fail. Getting into more debt by throwing money at the problem is not the route to a stable club. Its the route to a dark and dangerous path to financial instability and possibly administration.
Give Ole the summer and if he still ain't doing the business then bring Jones back and go the slow route. Rome wasn't built in the day and lets not let our desires to be up in the Premier League competing with Swansea City overshadow our true wants, a stable football club in the local community we can support.
