Interesting.

I lived in the Republic of Ireland in the mid 80s and got to know a few families that were all for the "cause". You could not avoid them tbh. One of these families had a "leak" a young man and the IRA death squad were closing in on him. Before they found out it was him the grandmother of the family who was then my age now stepped forward and took the hit for him. She was found in a field dead and the young lad disappeared to America we think.

Just another story in those times but I hope they do find the murderers today.

Hahaha.

Northern Ireland is the great hypocrisy of the western world. The US spent years condemning terrorism in the Middle East but on the side it was indirectly funding the IRA's efforts against the UK.

Gerry Adams has gotten away with a lot more than he should have. Personally, I don't think he's a freedom fighter. I think he's a coward. I don't think he ever murdered anyone himself. He just ordered others to do it. That's just my opinion though. I don't know all the facts but I've read enough about the conflict to have my suspicions about him.

On a personal note, I do think Ireland should be Ireland. England should never have gone over and got involved in the first place. However, that's long gone now and Northern Ireland seems happy to remain as it is in these more peaceful times.

Zabier, I work with a few Protestants and the violence is still there just not on the scale it used to be. A few of them go back for the marching and they tell me it gets pretty bad. I also work with Catholics from Ireland and they seem to have a chip on their shoulder . But I get on with all of them

That's sad to hear Xcasual. I guess we don't hear about it over here because it would be bad for the UK political scene if it turned out the Good Friday agreement hadn't worked as well as many thought it had.

i was born after the IRA and things or by the time i grew up that was all over. but every time i see his name gerry adams, it always says "sinn feinn" or something along those lines, what does that mean ?

Re: Gerry Adams

Thu May 01, 2014 9:26 am

Sinn Feinn has been compared to Al-Qaeda or Hezbollah by their opposition. I'm not sure they are that extreme but they were pretty much the main terrorist group but they often used to publicly play down their links to the IRA.

So the people that fought to be independent are now independent in the republic, so what do they have to fight for now?.

They want Ireland to be just Ireland , not split with Northern Ireland

Re: Gerry Adams

I watched some Ross Kemp thing about the place, and it still seems pretty savage over there, them marches don't go down to well, most of the violence seemed to come from the side that want to be British... The ones coursing the agro all looked like teenagers. It seemed more a case of "let's smash the place up for the sake of it" rather than anything to do with the politics of it all

Re: Gerry Adams

Thu May 01, 2014 10:39 am

It's become more of a blood feud over the years. People using the Troubles as an excuse to enact revenge or their own form of justice. It's always the youth that are the most vocal in these things. The ones who don't really understand what it was all started over but have seen their families suffer enough to know all they want us revenge.

can someone give me some history on the IRA please, we wasnt taught much in school except they are terrorists, i've seen one or two things but from what i gathered, Ireland didnt want to be british so troops where sent out there, then troops killed women and children doing a peaceful protest, so the ira formed to kill british soldiers, is that true or am i way off ?

Ireland was a country in itself but was riled by the British for 800 years. The IRA was formed to regain its indedendence. In the 1920 under political pressure Britain divided Ireland into two countries, Eire and Northern Ireland.
This divide was done due to the fact the 6 Northern states were immigrants from Scotland who was ted to remain under British control. This divide resulted in the IRA never recognising either country and basically became their springboard to become big.

i think that is over simplified.........you are correct as far as it goes, but the protestants are of British descent, the Catholics are of Irish.....if it was purely a religon thing it would go on else where.........

There's a film called The Wind That Shakes the Barley that kind of shows how the IRA started but also shows how certain leaders have warped their initial freedom fighting stance into their own merciless and brutal war path.

sinn Feinn is the political wing of the provisional IRA (not that they have ever admitted to it), it translates into English as ourselves.
