Ashton Gate

Bristol City starting the redevelopment of their ground this week, with diggers moving in. Will be sad to see the East End go first, the ground was a sh**e hole but always enjoy visiting ashton gate. won't be the same once the redevelopment has been finished.

What are they doing to it? Went to Ashton Gate last season.. Always a good away trip.

Apparently just a complete redevelopment of the ground, more about it here.

Looks like it won't be a modern put me up stadium & may actually have some character.

All that just for 6k extra seats. Seems hardly worth it. There original plans looked a lot better with them moving to a brand new stadium, that must have fallen through then. Judging by the pictures, it doesn't seem to be much improvement, from what it is now lol

You can't get anything built in Bristol that may benefit the population.

There is an article somewhere ridiculing the council and giving Cardiff as an example of getting things built.

They are STILL trying to get and indoor arena. Its been about 10 years now.

As for BCFC's new ground it fell through because of green activists.

In a way, I'm quite glad their original plans fell through. I was quite envious when I first saw the plans. Well done to the tree huggers

Didn't their original plans depend on England getting the World Cup in 2018? Quite a few grounds were to be redeveloped as part of the bid. Once the bid failed, all the plans were shelved.

Outside of the ground looks so much better than ours, embarrassing. Inside our stadium looks decent but outside it looks a tip

Re: Ashton Gate

its not very symetrical in fact it looks odd with one stand much larger than rest ground? bit like chelseas before they redeveloped the bridge! :old:

barry if you look ours is slightly bigger than original stand its not like a sore thumb! its also designed in same way as original , take look at both and you tell me city's anywhere like bcfc one?

Which means it won't be symmetrical with one stand bigger than the rest of the ground... which is exactly how you described the BCFC new stadium. :thumbright:

ffs barry dont be so predantic! you know excactly what i mean city's new stand flows into either stand without looking odd as got same structure and is only slightly higher than rest stadium! bcfc stand is out of sync with rest of stadium! and is nowhere near same level as rest of stadium, but guess you think it is!!

Also, look at the one end of the redeveloped stadium, it looks really odd. Like they wanted to go with a full bowel type stadium, but didn't have enough funds to complete it so left the one end in the hope no one noticed it. It doesn't look to bad in the picture in that link above, but in other pictures, it looks right out of shape. They've gone overboard with that one big stand

Yeah, I remember reading that article somewhere saying Bristol has barely evolved from the 90s because of slow building work and constant rejected planning permissions.

They were on the verge of going down to League 2 by the looks of it at one point this season so making these changes now seems like a bad time to do it. Bristol really should be looking to have a team competing for Premier League football though. Amazed they've been so poor for so long.

Lived in Bristol for 20 years - thankfully I don't anymore.

In-laws were all Gasheads and came from that part of the city. They hated Shitty with a passion, seen as a rich club in Bristol compared with working class Rovers, a club supported by all the outsiders coming into the city. Laughable to think that now but this was 30 years ago.

As a place Bristol can be both fabulous and horrific - nothing strategically sensible gets done there, and the comparison with Cardiff is very poor when looking at infrastructure etc. That said lots going on, students love their time there usually, and plenty of the arty stuff if that's your thing.

Ashton Gate is a dump, end of - and lest we forget, Bristolians generally hate the Welsh.

"Big city with small town mentality" - best way to describe Bristol.

As for Premiership etc - never been a big football city, always big at rugby and cricket, like the rest of the West Country.

The only thing that pisses me off about Bristol these days is that their airport management know how to run an airport compared to the pile of shit at Cardiff Airport

Re: Ashton Gate

Wed Apr 30, 2014 9:05 pm

As a city I like Bristol. They have very good shopping areas in many of the suburbs. Really put the likes of Canton and Clfton Street to shame.

As said they have also moved years ahead of us in respects to their airport and they also have poor transport links to Lulsgate but seem to have overcome it.

The only things behind the times are the council and the parochial locals. A great city for students and some of the architecture around Clifton is very grandiose and expensive.

Been there many times to watch the City but couldn't stomach us playing Bristol City in RED so will never get to see the new developments.
