April 26, 1927: Cardiff welcomes home FA Cup heroes

Sat Apr 26, 2014 9:25 am

Scenes of wild, unrestrained enthusiasm, only equalled by those of Armistice Day in 1918, marked the return of the Cardiff City XI to the Welsh capital last night with the Football Association Cup.

The victorious team and officials were making their way to City Hall, where they were accorded a civic welcome and entertained to a supper and dance. The streets were thronged with 150,000 people. Two hours before the train from London arrived, all street traffic had been suspended, and crowds came early to secure front places at the barriers.

Every conceivable vantage point was occupied, and life and limb were endangered with reckless abandon. Headed by mounted police, and a band in a charabanc, the players were driven through the streets in touring cars.

On the appearance of the players, the pent-up enthusiasm of the crowd burst its floodgates. Barriers and lines of police became as mere straws before the rush, and all along the route men, women and children ran alongside the cars, throwing garlands of flowers, lucky mascots and other favours to their heroes.
