Plastics Unite

Thu Apr 24, 2014 11:06 pm

I'm seeing a lot of people being called plastics for various reasons which we all know is a derogatory term used by people who think they're better than others because they go to away games, go to home games, know what something means when others may not etc. etc.

I'm sure there are hundreds of reasons why people don't do what someone else does and I guess I'm a plastic as I now live in California despite being born & raised in Barry and living 80% of my 50 years in Wales and supporting Cardiff City since the mid 70s when the biggest thrill was getting promoted back to the old 2nd division and actually making the 4th round of the FA cup and maybe playing one of the big teams once every few years.

So plastics unite is for those of you who like me aren't as perfect a supporter as those who like to call someone a plastic.

The term is thrown about very easily nowadays and like your reasons people don't take it into consideration.

I don't understand why we kick up a fuss about it.. If fans choose to follow us because of something recent in success terms or how we've built up then why should they be stopped, as long as they continue to follow us through the good and bad. It happens everywhere.

I have a good laugh at some of the old heads of our supporters who have a dig at them that they are at fault for our atmosphere at home games where no-one really pulls out their finger. It's just a quick excuse to pass the buck on our poor atmosphere.

People incorrectly label new fans at CCS as plastics. Totally wrong as they are attending games in their area.

The only definition of a plastic is a fan of a club well outside the area in which they live and with NO link to the region where their supported team at based.

South Wales based Liverpool fans are the best example. They are all of the same age due to their childhood years coinciding with Liverpool's success. They must be creaming themselves now.

Some excellent points in this thread!

With this 5000 figure being thrown about, did they actually count the number of heads there? Or did they do the standard, "any ticket given out is a person in attendance".

Correct. In fact to decrease the amount of plastics in Cardiff we would want to see lots of new fans enter the CCS, even if they are supporters of other teams. I know a few people whose allegiance has changed from a big four club to the City in the last ten years.

Good Post. To me there is no such thing as a "plastic" you either like football or you don't!
I don't care whether someone is born in one Town or City and supports or likes another Town or Cities team.
I have never had a second team, only Cardiff City, but thousands of fans like one or more teams.
I have been a ST holder for years, seen countless away games, and saw Toshack score his first hat trick at N.P.

But I want to join Plastics Unite. because Why?....Because I don't wear Stolen Island or fake football fashion gear, I wouldn't be seen dead in a jacket with eye goggles sewn into the hood(wtf)
I don't go to many away games these days due to my job, family commitments and cost.
I don't know the latest football jargon, I don't study stats and couldn't care less about the politics(I just go to watch football)
I watch Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea etc on the TV and enjoy the games,
I sit down when I'm requested to by stewards in the stadium and I don't shout abuse at the away fans.
I feel I meet some of the Criteria to be a "Plastic"

So Plastics Unite it is! United...United!

We haven't got many plastics.

If we have 17K season tickets for next season then the strategy for converting football fans into Cardiff City fans has worked. Lets face it we are favourites to finish bottom or bottom 3 and have been since Christmas,so the prospect of premier league football was low.

The 5K who havent renewed are the plastics

Or maybe the poorer ones who can't afford it :|

Completely agree. Plastics are people who claim to support a football team miles away from where they live and watch every game infront of their tele's.

What do you call the ones that have jumped on the bandwagon though ? It's not fact because it hasn't happened (fingers crossed it doesnt happen) but what do you call the people that won't be seen again next season if we're in the championship? Are these really Cardiff City fans or are they just interested in us when we're playing at the top level ?

Or are they just pissed off with a price rise in Season Tickets and being mocked by a loon of an owner who doesn't give a toss about the identity or traditions of their club?

I consider myself a complete plastic, still like watching LFC play, and only followed City for last 3 years, done every home game and 5 away this year and if I'm honest even with the off field crap have loved it, results at home aside, totally addicted to away atmosphere, I can understand long term fans feelings towards us so called plastics and the annoyance at the rebrand which even I think is ridiculous, but it's going to be a big old stadium to fill next year and if people who have A second team can be converted to follow their local team bring it on, did the trick for this 100% plastic I can tell you

I have no doubt that there are some fans that feel this way and I don't blame them what so ever, I question myself constantly asking is it really worth it. But there aren't lets say 5000+ who feel that way and are going to stop going for those reasons surely ? because I'm sure if we do go down then we'll only average around 20-22,000 for the season.

What I mean is what do you call the fans that wernt here before the Premier League and no doubt won't be here next season if we go back down. Maybe not plastics but what sort of fans are they ?

So somebody in New York supporting a London team (or vice-versa) - are they Nylon?

Someone from Cardiff supporting a London team (or vice versa) - are they Taflon?

Jealousy is such an ugly emotion.

Former giants Manchester United stand head and shoulders above Liverpool when it comes to that particular acolade. At their peak they claimed to have nearly 400 million followers on social media - and most of them from Asia.
