" CITY STARS TO RETURN "

Thursday April 17th 2014

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will bring John Brayford, Nicky Maynard and more of Cardiff City’s loan players back into his squad for the start of next season – no matter whether they survive in the Premier League or go down.

Full-back Brayford and striker Maynard are among nine players out on loan and Solskjaer says: “They have shown they are quality players. We wanted John and Nicky to go out and play regular first-team football and they have done well.

“John has shown his ability playing for Sheffield United, while Nicky I know all about. I know Uwe [Wigan manager Uwe Rosler] really well and we have talked about him a fair bit.

“John, Nicky and the other lads out on loan are part of our football club, we keep a regular check on how they are doing and we will bring them back to us for pre-season.”

Brayford was signed by former Bluebirds’ manager Malky Mackay from Derby County for £1.5m last July at a time when City thought their first choice, Kevin Theophile, was injured and unavailable.

Theophile recovered, started the season playing for French club Rennes and signed for Cardiff in September. He quickly became first-choice right-back ahead of Matthew Connolly after he had started the first three Premier League fixtures.

Brayford, though, only figured in League Cup ties before linking up again with his former Derby manager Nigel Clough at Sheffield United.

The 26-year-old, under contract with Cardiff until the summer of 2017, has played 15 matches and scored twice for the Blades, helping them reach the FA Cup semi-finals, and they are keen to keep him.

Maynard, whose Bluebirds’ contract ends in 2015, was a £2.5m signing by Mackay from West Ham, but he suffered a knee injury and joined Wigan soon after Solskjaer took charge.

Joe Mason is now back with Cardiff after his loan spell at Bolton reached the maximum time – he scored six goals in 12 starts – while Kadeem Harris is still on the mend from an ankle injury.

The other seven Bluebirds currently out on loan are: Simon Moore (Bristol City), Ben Nugent (Peterborough), Adedeji Oshilaja (Sheffield Weds), Filip Kiss (Ross County), Joe Ralls (Yeovil), Etien Velikonja (Rio Ave).

I'm not surprised Brayford is doing very well In League One as he was a very good Championship defender - maybe he would have done the job in the Premiership given a chance.

If we go down well have a competitive squad and hopefully Ole will be able to fully implement his ideas and also get rid of Kenwyn Jones. If he can't be assed in the Prem I'd rather not watch him not bother in the Championship.

If we go down then it will be very interesting to see who stays and who leaves. I can see the likes of Kenwyne Jones, Jordon Mutch, David Marshall, Steven Caulker and Gary Medel all going but not sure we'll lose anyone unwillingly after them. If you look at our potential starting squad with those absentees for next season, it's not a bad Championship to start with...

I don't think we'll lose Ole's January signings unless massive bids come in and like to think we can keep the likes of Noone, Cala and Whittingham for one more season in the Championship. I'm optimistic already! Still got the Premier League to fight for yet!

Gunnarsson? - no thanks...not even in the Championship!

He couldn't pass water and he's a liability with giving away needless free-kicks.

I find it quite likely that Cala will go back to Spain if we're going down.

He has to say that really as they all will be returning and its a good time to have a look at everyone. Whatever league we are in I think we will have a clear out. I hope so anyway

Cant see Cala playing in the championship. Daehli might get offers, Southampton fans suggested they should buy him if we go down they rated him as one of our best and he didn't even do anything spectacular that day. As for Noone he has proven that he is good enough for the PL, I am sure he will get offers. Lets hope we stay up its kind of depressing if we loose all out best players.

If OGS stays then I think Daehli will stay...I don't think Brayford wants to come back..I think he'll want a permanent move. If Cala goes and I would expect him to, then the team looks quite average to be honest.
